I have twin 1996 Yamaha 225 saltwater series 2 with carbs. The port engine is throwing a lot of water out of the upper exhaust ports (just below the cowling). Would bad thermostats or a bad poppet valve cause this, and how do I trouble shoot this problem. Thanks in advance

probably corrosion has put holes where they should not be. Just my opinion. search the forums for corrosion problems and see what the symptoms were

Thanks for your post. I'm going to pull the lower unit and re-seat it. Maybe the water tube didn't set right. I'm not ruling out some sort of corrosion to the exhaust port though. I just want to make sure this problem doesn't turn into a over heat situation.

describe excessive water.
pulling the lower wont help anything.
most likly a stuck presure control valve, stuck open tstats or the other engine has the problem.

Re: Excessive water from upper exhaust ports

Ok, I'm a little embarrassed to ask this but I think I have the opposite problem. I have a good stream of water coming out of the engine but none coming out of the exhasut ports. What controls this water flow- the popper, the thermostats, etc? The engine I just bought is a rebuild so I would have thought that any obstructions in the water jacket would have been realized??

Also, I am rewiring the boat as well- anybody know the setting on the tachometer for a 1995 200hp two stroke yamaha?? I think the tach reading is a bit high right now but not sure.

One last question, how about the proper break-in routine for a rebuild?

many, many thanks
