Thats cool pony....I used to lift whatever too back in the day. 44 years old and two back surguries later, and Im scared to pick-up the tab for lunch.

Age/wisdom (using the word loosely) makes you think about the unnecessary abuse you put your body thru at a younger age. Protect your back. It deteriorates naturally anyway. Your gonna need it 60+ years from now. :(

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

When I lifted weights it was more of a low weight high reps kinda thing. I didn't want to get too bulky. I would curl, reverse curl, row, reverse row, bench press, military press and several others I didn't know the names of. The most dificult one was laying on the bench like your gonna do a bench press, but after you have the weights above your chest with your arms fully extended, you lower the barbell behind you slowly, keepin your arms fully extended, untill your arms are parellel to the floor. Then bring the bar back over your head in an arc, and lower the bar to your pelvis until your arms are again parellel to the floor, keeping your arms fully extended the entire time. I got up to 60 or 70 lbs with that, but that was the exercise I dreaded the most. It was extremely hard.

Thats pretty good Chappy. I passed my PT tests easily when I was in the army, but I was in great shape then. That was back in my early 20's. The military was a piece of cake for me, partly because I thought it was going to be a lot tougher than it really was. I trained for almost a year before I finaly joined and went to boot camp.

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

Maybe this will help. My fishing partner did this two years ago.
Twenty years ago we were in the Army together and in very good shape.
He like me is 5' 7 1/2 and his weight was 170 lbs
Jump ahead 20 years.. he was the 60 years old and weighs 240 lbs. Still only 5' 7
Got exhausted walking down hill (for real)
We went back to what we knew. Basic pushups situps stretching knee bends. etc etc
And a Gazzell (sp) for low impact running.

This was my bright idea and it worked!
NO GOALS! What so ever! Just try one more repetition!
20 years ago we used to do a 100 push ups run 4 miles drop for another 100 then 100 situps.

Well his first day it was 3 push ups and 5 sit ups! Was so exausted he didn't even try the other three exercises or the gazzell !

6 months later he had dropped 42 pounds to 198 and doing 50 repetitions of each of the 5 exercises and a hour each night on the gazzell.

And looking real good for a old fart! Color went from pasty white/grey to pink again. And was getting compliments from everyone.

Take it slow and just get back in shape.
Like Reel Poor said, start with a 12oz and work up to a 16oz :D :D
Anyway if a old guy like that can get it together you should be able to do it also.

You asked!
My .02 and yes I'm proud of what he did! :)

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

Thats exactly how I plan to do it Link. Nice and slow. :) I plan on doing 10 pushups and 5 situps until I can do it easily, then add one more rep every other time I exercise. Thats how I got to the high reps years ago.
By the way, my time on the exercise machine is under 5 minutes right now. I have absolutely no endurance. I'm not gonna rush it because I don't want any injuries or heart attacks!

I push myself up from the table at least 3 times a day! It is great exercise. Time to go for breakfast and push-up number one for the day!

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

I'm not in too bad a shape for not working out. Just don't have the time to do it. However my work ethics allows me to get the exerise that I need. I can't sit still for too long of a time. I have got to be doing something. I heat with wood. So I drop, cut, split, stack, and haul the wood myself. Then in the summer I do a lot of hand digging. It may not be a workout at the gym, but I still get a workout working. I figure if I'm going to be wearing out my joints, it might as well be productive to the needs around my property.

About the only thing I will do that is an exercise is pull ups. I'm getting ready to turn 50 this year and can still lift my own weight (180) 10 times.

If you are out of shape, like others have said, start off slow and work your way up. If you get sore, that is a sign that your working your muscles building them. Keep it up or you will loose what you have gained. Dad always told me if you don't feel pain at the end of the day, you didn't work hard enough.

I know what you mean Yeah I am 5'6" 190# with 16" biceps and 18" neck but all that weight lifting has tooken its toll. On a humid day my shoulders sound like there is gravel in them all the poping and grinding. And I am only 29 so take it easy and always stretch

Mon. Here is my routine. I go to the gym and do upper body strength training followed by four miles on the elliptical machine in thirty minutes. On strength training days it is done with one-minute break between sets.

I also keep the heart rate up the whole time if your trying to get rid of fat that is mandatory.

Been doing this for the last fifteen years seems to work for me.

Tues. Elliptical only.

Wed.legs mostly leg press at the gym.

Thur. Elliptical only.

Fri same as mon.

Off sat.

Sun Elliptical.

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

I had been hitting the gym at night too. The owners of a small gym gave me a key for after hours workout all free, so we hit it about 0200 every night. Warm up with a half mile run, then hit weights, then run a mile or mile and a half to cool down.
On weights we start the week off with legs and some back or abs. The move to working chest and triceps, then back and biceps and back to legs. By we I mean one other officer and I. He just got back from the Marines not long ago, so he is one of those freaks that likes hurting himself.

Things got busy and I got lazy and hadn't lifted in 6 months. Last night worked legs. Today.....OUCH!!!

Glad there is someone with you at two am Lubedude.quite some time ago we had a power lifter that lived across the river in Granite City Ill. They gave a key to the gym that he belonged to. He was training for a power lifting contest or something. When they opened the gym the next morning the found him with about three hundred pounds on his neck. :(

Re: Exercise program/How many pushups

Okay, I am exhausted from just reading about all these exercises. I need a rest. lol

Seriously though, I have arthritis in my spine. Pain takes up most of my days(but the pills help). I do exercise though, but no weight lifting!
