1993 4.3 OMC/Cobra

After pulling drive to reseal the lower unit, I noticed that my exhaust bellow has cuts in it along the bottom. I have searched the site, and some have said that "slits" in the bottom of the bellow are normal, especially if they are aftermarket...Is that true? Could that be another reason for water in the gear lube?

Re: Exhaust bellow question

It's normal for the slits to be in the exhaust bellows, has nothing to do with getting water in the gear lube. You will need to have someone do a pressure/vacumm check to see which seal is leaking.

Yes it's normal.
No, it has nothing to do with oil in the drive.
You need to pull the drive and check for water in the ujoint bellows, if dry, drain the drive and pressure and vacuum check the drive to find the leak.

Re: Exhaust bellow question

Wow, thanks for the fast response.

I will not order the bellow then- the ujoint bellow is dry and in great shape...so I'll leave them alone. It would have been a bummer to order one and the new below had the same slits...

As for the drive, I've already found the source of the leak. Just waitng on the seal kit. Thanks again, this is a great site.
