Exhaust Manifold Replacement

I'm getting ready to start my very last project before I put my boat in the water for the summer. I have a 454 inboard that frequents saltwater so I am planning to replace the exhaust manifolds and risers as preventive maintenance. I know that there is 6 bolts holding each manifold on, but I am afraid that I may break one off. Any advice on getting these out easily?

jeffnangela

I too am getting ready to do this tomorrow, I am using a penetrating lubricant on the bolts and studs and tapping them with a plastic hammer to vibrate them a bit after I apply it. This has worked before on car engines so I hope it works on this. One thing, WD 40 is NOT a very good penetrating lubricant..

thanks for the info. I thought about the penetrating lubricant but tapping them with a plastic hammer is a good thought.
How about running the engine to get it hot or is it better with a cold engine?

Jeffnangela

warming the engine up might help after it cooled back down but heat normally expands metal, I would probably just put it on for a couple of days and then give it a try. Or use an impact wrench set on a low pressure to let it hammer some.

Good luck
