Exhaust Problem, Carbon Build-up

My 1995 Evinrude 15hp will not run at low speeds or idle. We changed plugs and did carb cleaner. When we had this problem in the past, we had it repaired and they said the exhaust path was filled with carbon. He cleaned it and suggested we run at high speeds occassionally. We also changed to a high grade oil for our fuel mix. We use the motor for trolling, but run it at high speed a while on each trip. Now its acting up again. Is there any way we can clean the exhaust paths without having to take it to the dealer? Do we need special tools to remove or disassemble lower unit to get to exhaust?

Did you remove, disassemble, and thoroughly clean the carb? If you just sprayed in carb cleaner that rarely accomplishes anything. It would make more sense to do clean the carb first than removing the exhaust cover and possibly powerhead to clean the exhaust path. A fouled carb is a much more common problem than plugged exhaust, and you may just have a dirty idle circuit.

Just wrenches basically,to pull the powerhead and lower unit,then a screwdriver and hammer to remove the carbon.But not a job for the back yard.

It could be a carb problem as lorin suggests,also.

But my guess is you've been here before,and here we go again.

When you get it fixed this time.

If you plan to troll alot .

You may want to consider some sea foam in the fuel , as well as periodic, decarbing.
