exhaust relief ports

So the 1982 35hp tiller I picked up runs pretty well. It took a bit to get her going but after she was warmed up one pull started her. Some issues I noticed...

The tell tale was strong at first then got weaker. When I inspected it after I got off the water I found a small piece of debris in the hose (looked like a piece of a leaf). Hopefully removing the debris resolved it.

It smoked ALOT from the exhaust relief ports and sprayed some water from there too. I know 2 strokes are smokey but it seemed excessive. It didn't smoke so much underway, just at idle. Is the H2O coming out of the relief ports normal?

There is also an occasional stutter when decelerating from WOT. I'm going to pick up new plugs and wires tomorrow. Think that may help?

i would forist check the compression and spark on both cylinders, i would buy a carb kit, clean and rebuild the carb, drop the lower unit, and replace the impeller.

yes water comes out the exhaust relief ports. impellers dry out and should be change atleast every 2-3 years.

did you prime the bulb before trying to start it. Sounds like the float bowl was not full. If you did and also choked it when cold and it took awhile do as TD says and rebuild the carb. Alway change an impeller on a new to you motor unless you know for a fact it is new. (don't know how you can though) much piece of mind when out on the lake.

Peace of mind- yes, I suppose.
The price of an impeller is so much less expensive than another motor is the way I look at it. I tend to do my maintenance better when I am low on funds
