Re: exhust housing hair line crack 40hp 64

Is it leaking exhaust or water from that crack? Where, exactly, is the crack, and how long is it?

Not enough information for us to offer much help. Photos would be good. If not that, a detailed description of the crack would help.

Could be that it's just the outer silencing housing that's cracked. If so, a little JB Weld will pretty much take care of it. But, if it's leaking exhaust or water, it could be more serious.

Use plenty of words or a few photos.

like i siad where the exhaust housing bolts to the power head and sorry it is water
NO jb weld is going to fix this
The hair line crack is just off to the right of one of the 4 bolts that connect the hole housing unit to the power head or the head to the exhaust housing witch ever way you prefer,
it is not broke away clean just a crack and i am afraid that if i tighten the bolt that it will get worse
So with it leaking water and not a tight seal what would be the worst that could happen as it has prob, been like that for some time now.
As i have done a lot of work to the motor over the winter and did find a bolt in the bottom of the exhaust housing in fact it was a perfect fit to the one that was not there.
So with all these words with no pic if you can give me an answer that would be just great.
Thank-you

Well, it's not going to get better on it's own. Your best bet will be to find a non-running parts engine and swap the parts over. A couple hundred bucks should get you one in today's market. You'll also end up with a lot of other useful parts, like a spare prop and other bits and pieces.

Frankly, having a parts engine for an old-timer like yours is a good bet. Since you've been running it anyhow, you probably don't have to rush out and buy the first one. Still, it's not going to get better.

If you're willing to tear it down, you could probably get it welded up and remachined. That would cost you probably about the same as finding a parts engine.

Thank you for your input.
I allready have an older 64 rude 40 hp to go look at on Sat. the guy has it all set up in a barrel for me to check out said he was looking to get 200.00 for it with new cables and the control box.
It might be a better all round motor than the one i have, mybe mine could be a parts motor.

Thank's again

Good luck. Either one can be a parts motor. That's the fun thing with older outboards like yours. You can find parts motors, or even good running ones, fairly cheap. Enjoy.

Re: exhust housing hair line crack 40hp 64

Hi guy's
After running the motor for a second time, i notice a stream of water coming out of the top hole of the heat exchange cover I did put 2 new gasket on inner and outer cover a did put 2 new gasket on at the 2 mounting studs, and also a new thermostate.
Do you think that the new stat is stuck open ?
Or could it be something else.
I have the heat and electric combanation carb and the water is leaking at the point where the copper tube is attached to the heat exchanger.

And also any more suggestions on my original water leak at exhaust housing would be a help.
Sorry if this thread is not in keeping with the first, but it is all water related trouble i'am having
Thank's again

Re: exhust housing hair line crack 40hp 64

I had to replace the exhaust cover on my 40 last fall. The cover was rotten around the holes where the heat exchanger air tubes came out. Water started shooting out after I replaced the water pump and the increased pressure finished the rotten old cover off. I got a new one from sea-way marine. My inner cover was stainless and was fine.

I did replace the water pump and gasket to
And also the stat,
When i opened the heat exchanger i cleaned up and replaced inner and outer gaskets even the 2 that go on the threaded mounting nuts.
The outer cover show's no were on it and the inner is like yours stainless
Do you think with all the newer parts that the presure is causing the leak?
And maybe after running it i should snug bolts up.

Thanks again

Re: exhust housing hair line crack 40hp 64

So the water is actually coming out of the heat exchanger hole or is it coming out around it? There is no way that water can get into the heat exchanger to come out the hole unless the pipes on it are cracked. In fact the water should never even be contacting the heat exchanger except possibly at the gaskets line.

No way the thermostat has anything to do with it. Nor is there any way to have too much water pressure. It just can't happen.

Re: exhust housing hair line crack 40hp 64

Hi guy's
I have another qustion about the leak at the heat exchanger.
I have isolated the leak (water)to the top stud that comes out of the outer cover.
the stud is one of two that are connected to the heat exchanger plate.
They both come out of the outer cover one (top) has a fitting screwed into it that recives the warm air tube that goes to the choke body on the carb.
The other stud has no fitting and left open works like a vent i quess.

From what i can see i have spun the stud and striped of the flat spot's on the outer cover that keeps the stud in place as you tighten the nut.
So i would like to know if i can permenatly seal this top stud and remove fitting and cover top hole and leve the bottom one as is and just manualy choke the motor

Thanks agian
