I know they help YOU see better, but they blind everyone else.

When i replace a head light, i just get the regular strength. that is all you need.
sure it would be nice to have a brighter light, but i don't want to blind everyone else.

they should ban the extra bright lights.
they do more harm than good.

Well, where I live, we don't have street lights and we do have a lot of wildlife on the roads at night, I run the brightest lights I can and supplement them with bright running lights as well, they have saved my butt more times than I can count!

If I lived in a more urban environment, I would probably not run them as bright and would not use supplemental lights, but where I live, they are lifesavers and the majority of us run them..in my area, they do far more good than harm..

yea, i know the alaska state troopers have "moose lights" on their cruisers.

they just make it like daylight out.

but why can't we design a light where the low beam is not that bright, but the high beam is extra bright?
these new lights make low beams look like high beams.

Actually BMW designed a light many years ago, back in the 80's that is a very bright light, and does not interfere with the oncoming drivers vision..I am very surprised that more companies have not licensed that technology! You could stand right directly in front of it at 50 feet and it would not bother you at all.

I have also seen systems, where when the car senses an oncoming car at night it will move the headlight a small amount so you could still see, but yet, it did not shine in the drivers eyes.

The technology is out there.

We around here, actually adjust our lights down a bit, so they don't hit the oncoming driver with a full blast of bright light..

You can run extra brights and if you adjust them correctly have little effect on the drivers coming at you. It is really quite easy..

The ones that really bother me are the "blue" colored high intensity lights, they remind me of the bomb blasts I experienced in the Military, they will blind you like a flash bang grenade!

Agreed! I live way out in the sticks, a long way from street lights, and when you meet someone with those extra bright lights, you are BLIND for 1/2 a mile!

If properly adjusted, regular lights are fine. The extra bright lights are suitable ONLY if you are the only one on the road.

As someone who drives a larger, higher vehicle at night for 8 hours at a time, I can assure you that HID & other "super white" lights are NOT the problem. Aimed properly, they do not blind other drivers. (MT knows the score. ;))
The real problem is that many people have their headlights adjusted improperly. It is FAR more noticeable on cars with "regular" headlamps.

Once again, "people", not technology, are the real culprits.

Agreed, especially in rainy, glary weather!! If adjusted properly, fine though.

When you replace the headlights ........ there have been instances of wiring melting. Make sure your wires can handle the load.

I installed brighter headlights (sealed beam) in my 3/4 ton and it makes driving at night more comfortable.

I guess your headlight upgrade will be directly related to your wallet. I do know that wallyworld sells a set of "off road" HID auxiliary lights and those also work nice to supplement what you drive.

I would like to see those "blue" headlamps countered with the blue light of a state trooper!

I, too, live in the sticks with the wildlife. The super bright lights are a crutch for safe, defensive driving. Seeing the critters sooner does little good when you are driving too fast to react.

Not trying to say anything about your driving, MT. I see your point, just putting in my .02.... :)

Hell, sometimes Bambi will aim for you! A few years ago, I was making a run to a call for an ATV accident WAY back in the woods. Down a gravel road, lights AND sirens, doing about 45mph, I saw about a 100lb doe top a small hill around 50 yards to my 11 o'clock. She bailed off that hill and made straight for us. Little I could do but let off the gas and wait to see what happened......

She hit our bus just in front of the left rear tire. Blood, hair, and a small wrinkle in the aluminum trim. The only thing more interesting was the two drunks we picked up from the ATV

But, I digress. Regardless of your headlight choice, drive safe out there, and always watch for the other 'guy'.

Re: Extra bright headlights, like them or hate them?

Well I will disagree with them being a crutch, I live over 7 miles away from the nearest paved road on a very narrow graveled road that is timbered along both sides, having the extra light at night makes a big difference on what I can see and react to, and you can't drive more than about 30-35mph on my road. I have still had close calls, so having the extra light to see farther down the road and see what is jumping out of the brush is a BIG plus for me.

But as stated by me as well as others the problem happens when people don't adjust their lights correctly, most people don't realize how small of an adjustment makes a really big difference in how those lights project. 2-4 degrees down and about 2-4 degrees to the side can pretty much eliminate the glare problem in the oncoming drivers eyes, and still show no real problems for you being able to see completely. My supplemental lights are mounted on the top side of the bumper and they are only used when their is no oncoming traffic, but they are also adjusted to illuminate the sides of the road to give me a wide viewing pattern.

Re: Extra bright headlights, like them or hate them?

Living in the country, I often drive on roads flanked by heavy woods on either side, or by open farm land on either side. Its common occurrence for deer to jump out in front of cars causing injury or death to the motorist and/or passengers.

That's why I get the strongest lights possible. So strong they go right through the trees like X-rays letting me see those suicide deer from a distance. That gives me time to stick my Glock 9mm out the window and bust a few caps off in the deers direction to let them know I'm coming.

When driving through farm land, I want the headlights to illuminate dozens of acres just like it was the 50 yard line of a Giants home game at night. That also has the effect of extending the hunting day by a few hours. I'm sure the game warden understands.

Of course, this self defense lighting has caused severe retina and lens issues for oncoming motorists. Complaints of retina detachment, lens fogging, permanent blindness, and driving off the road only to collide with a telephone pole are the most common complaints. As you can see, these are mere inconveniences to those affected.

Hey, if you want to drive at night in my neck of the woods, get the appropriate optic night wear (usually the filters used for looking at sun spots work well).

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

That whole paragraph is pronounced BOONDOCKS! :D

I really never worry about the game I see on the roads (and Moose are flat out stupid)......... it's the ones that surprise you that steal away the precious reaction time.

Oh BTW Mark....... A glock 9 mm for deer???? Go 45 acp!!! It has more thump power!

I live in the city & work out in the "sticks." Starting at 5AM, I drive roughly 7 miles on a well lit expressway then another 5 that is not lit. I get off at a well lit exit & onto a road that has lights only at some intersections for a couple miles before I pass by some well lit shopping malls on both sides then back into darkness for a few more. Then I hit a 30 mph limit through a small village that is well lit. Then about a half dozen more miles in total darkness till I pull into our well lit parking lot.

Off the expressway, it is one of the most highly deer populated sections in Western NY. Just about every day on the way home there is a dead deer lying alongside of the road somewhere.

I hate those large 4 wheel drive pick-ups/SUVs that have the white lights and those dang so called white "driving" lights underneath them in the morning. Especially with wet or icy pavement when they reflect off the pavement.

If I was the vengeful type, I'd take a boat million power spotlight & blitz them back...naaah...the hillbillies would probably grab their shotguns out of their back window & start shooting. ;)

Whats a shopping mall?

What is a well lit village?

Heck what is a well lit expressway?

Just on the drive home today there were 4 new killed deer on the road and the darn turkeys almost put me in the ditch, and I was only doing 25 mph....

Its a rat race every day and night around here w the traffic, and the bright blue lights are noticeably brighter.Ive been tempted to bright check oncomeing traffic w the newer lights recently.its hard to tell if they have the brights on or not, as some jackwagons do alot w conventional headlights. We also have whitetails splattered all over the roads w the shrinking habitat and increased traffic.I just missed a nice buck 2 nights ago at 55mh a mile from home.I could barely see the sillouete? of the crossing deer in the bright blue lights of the oncomeing car that rendered my lights ineffective as we approached.I think some folks could be blinded completely by these high intensety lights even if they are aimed correctly.
