Extra Drain Plug from Winterizing on 4.3L

We had a cold spell and I am new to the I/O world and needed to get my boat winterized quickly, so I had the local boat shop do it. They gave me a bag with 5 plastic drain plugs and one pipe fitting plug which looks as if it is a standard 1/2" pipe thread. I have found where all the plastic drain plugs go, but can't find where the metal pipe plug goes. Does anyone have an idea?

does it have a square head? May be the hull drain plug

Hull plug would be my guess. In true iBoat fashion, a picture would get you a more definite answer.

It is not the hull drain plug. It is a standard mpt pipe plugh with a square end.

My 4.3 has 5 drain plugs (blue). On each size of engine, 1 block, 1 exhaust manifold. 1 on the the hose connected to the water circulating pump. The Garboard bilge drain also takes a 1/2 pipe plug.

As a side note, many guys have replaced the blue drain plugs by removing the whole fitting(s) and replacing with a pipe plug.

Your local boat shop might have a little insight on the answer to your question

You didn't say which engine or year you have. My suggestion is to check the daiagram for the cooling circuit for your engine. If you don't have a repair manual, you can download a free one from 4share.com. Then check the diagrams. They will tell you where everything goes. Hy

Why didn't he put the drain plugs back in? Merc advises against storing boat with the plugs removed.

Quite correct... see below, an extract from service manual #25, page 1B-30...
