Hello
I have a 25 gallons gas tank and I was wondering if it's recommended to install another tank (25 gallons) in the front side of the boat or to replace the one I have with bigger one. I have 17 feet speedboat and I heard that would stabilize the boat better if I put load to the front of the boat.
Can you please tell me your opinion?
Thanks

Re: Extra gas tank

Hello, Stenmar. Unless you will use the fuel every outing, I would adise against it. Fuel stored onboard unused is asking for fuel-related problems down the road.
Not to mention the additional explosion hazards. You can ballance the boat with other items, (gear/people ect).
But try to calculate your fuel useage, using the "1/3 rule". Once you have burnt 1/3 of your fuel,it's time to head for home. This should leave you with 1/3 tank. But not allways. wind, currents and loading all factors-into this. so you may have more than 1/3...But you may also have less.

Ditto 12. What king of "speedboat" is it? I can tell you for a fact if it's a Hydrostream or something similar, putting weight in the nose will absolutly kill the performance.

Good luck!

Thanks 12Footer,
No, I don't want to use it for extra storage, I want to use more fuel because my tank is very small and I have to fill it very often. I want to keep the small tank as spare and to install a bigger one.

Hi Stemar, 12 Footer is right on about fuel related problems. If you decide to install an extra tank hook up your fuel system so both tanks draw fuel at the same time. If your boat planes well now the weight ratio will remain the same and performance will not be affected.

My boat holds plenty of fuel so I just move my wife. Have a good one! Hal
