87 Evinrude 15hp, O.K. I replaced the water pump, did the thermostat(the seal didn't seem to fit right though), and did the OMC carb rebuild kit, after I put all the parts I could find into the carb I had extra parts. 3 button looking things and 1 little clear plastic cup looking thing. Anyone know what these are? and if they were important? Also I replaced the thermostat and had to pick out the old rubber seal from inside the housing, there was no corrosion and no rust but the ring was a real pain, took me an hour before I said good enough and just put the other one in that came with the kit which didn't seem to fit right, is this normal? I haven't started it up yet waiting to hear from you guys first. Also when I pulled the motor out of the trash can I saw a little oil dripping out of the prop bearing housing, did I need to put gasket sealer on that before re-installing it? Also I pulled the fuel pump off and gave it a yank. How strong should the gas squirt out when you do this? Not sure if I need a fuel pump re-build also....Thanks for the help.......Warreb

The small clear plastic cup fits way down in the low speed needle hole. It protects the end of the needle from vibration. You have to remove the old one with an EZ out first. Most folks don't even mess with it. The metal "buttons" are the core plugs that cover drilled holes or passageways. Again, there is no reason to replace them unless the carb was really filthy or full of debris.

Use a socket of the correct diameter to seat the seal in the thermostat housing. Make sure you faced it the right way, tapered side out.

Re: "extra parts" with carb rebuild kit

Well, I thought I was finished. Put everything back together, filled the trash can back up. Started it, Adjusted the idle with the adjustment, somehow broke off the choke pull lever? (need a new one if you know where?). Started it up. runs like a champ. Let it run for about 20 minutes at about half throttle, revving it about every minute or so. Used my buddys laser heat gun, watched it go from 140 to 150 and all the way up to 173 degrees before I shut it down. The water coming out of the tell tale was starting to get hot but it was peeing really good. I think I may need to richen up the mixture in the carb. Is there one? Also I was told that 160 is o.k. what is the max it should go up to?....I'm about to just retire this thing....Please help...Thanks Warren

Your water in the trash can heating up will account for your temperature rise.
