Just got my 96 JC Suntoon, would like to add some back up power in case of a problem with my 40hp Johnson. Would a trolling motor work or is there a way to add like a 10hp outboard to get me back in to the trailer?

New to boating so any help would be great!

Re: Extra Power

A troller is probably a better idea, don't know where you would put an extra motor on a toon plus that is kinda overkill and alot of extra weight on the back of the boat.

I have been boating for a long time and only been stuck once and that was my fault, as long as you keep up maintanance you shouldn't have a problem.

A troller will get you back and more often than not someone will step up and give you a tow if need be.

Keep in mind trolling motors do not have unlimited range. If you are more than a mile from the dock, you best have a stout motor and a very high capacity deep cycle battery. You cannot run a trolling motor from the starting battery.

Re: Extra Power

I would just be in the back bay area of Chincoteague VA. I doubt I would be more than a mile away. Do you hook the battery up to the charging system of the engine or just recharge it at home? Can you reccomend a trolling motor?

Thanks :)

Re: Extra Power

I have a 55 pound thrust MinnKota Power Drive on my 18 footer. In my opinion you need at least a 50# - 55# motor. Anything bigger than that will require two batteries in series since they require 24 volts.

As for hooking the troller battery to the charging system, that would depend on if you us the troller for fishing or stricly for backup. If you use it for fishing there is no sense hooking it to the engine charging system. Trollers draw a great deal of power and therefore require a deep cycle battery. A deeply discharged battery would require hours of wide open throttle running to charge from the small alternator on the engine. If it is stricly a backup power source, then yes, you could interconnect the two batteries with a battery switch or isolator. My honest opinion, if you are less than a mile away of the dock forget the motor entirely. You have a cell phone. Call someone to come get you. It's cheaper.
