Sighhh.... another dumb as$ mistake.:facepalm::facepalm: Pulled the drive to change all the bellows last night, everything is on, looks nice !

Went to start the engine and noticed that I forgot to push in the button on the control to engage the drive (although the shifter was in full forward position).

Drive came off relatively easy, went on relatively smooth but I have no reverse. It just grinds. I know the shifter shoe probably is in the wrong but I couldn't find an article on how to correct the problem in the "ADULTS ONLY" section. Is it just as easy as taking off the drive again, putting the drive in FULL FORWARD gear and putting the drive back on ?

You may very well have bent that shift shoe. I'd pull it back off in forward gear and put it back on to make sure everything lines up correctly. While its off take a look at the shoe to see if it bent/broke.

No, if you bent something, what is done is done. Since the cable was not locked in by the control maybe you are OK. Try this: Remove the shift cable from the engine end, and pull the cable to see if reverse will engage (turn the prop clockwise to see if it locks). If it does it may just need adjustment, start at manual page 80 here: http://www.perfprotech.com/store/app_themes/ppt/images/tech-specs/alpha-shift-adjust.pdf . Let us know how that works out.

Well, I too pulled my outdrive with the shifter in N. I did reinstall it in FWD though and, like you, had no reverse. I re-pulled the drive and checked for bent parts and everything seemed fine and worked like it should. Reinstalled drive after replacing the shift shaft bushings - they are very loose even new - and still had no reverse. After posting on here DonS said to check the adjustment on the shift cable where it attaches to the engine. There is an adjust ment there, the manual shows it better than I can describe it, that I tweeked maybe 1/16" and I now have reverse through the full trim range (not in the full trailer position but I never intend to put in any gear in the full up position). You could probably check my posting history to find the relivent thread which has more details than I gave here.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the quick replies guys ! I will dink around with it today and let you know what I come up with. I know for sure though, that when I was putting everything back together, I made sure the shift linkage on the drive all lined up in the forward position. I am leaning toward a misadjusted cable. Thanks again.

trim drive up and lay between transom and drive and your looking for the shoe to be in the key.if not you may have bent shoe when you tightened nuts up.u may b lucky and have no damage.

i made sure the shoe was in the key in the forward position when reinstalling the drive. that's why I'm assuming its the cable adjustment that's off.

After 3 agonizing hours of twisting the brass barrell and adjusting the remote control cable, finally got the thing shifting as before. Took it out on the lake to look at the sunset. (Even hit 2 mph more than before the bellows job :) )

Thanks all for the info. Adjustment was definitely off. WHY ? No clue, but it was.
