Hello All!

Maybe someone can help me with a recent purchase of a 2000 F115 Yamaha four stroke. The motor has very low hours and was not used much (if any) in the last three years. Long story short, put the boat in and everything was great twice. I decided to change the oil and filter and put her away for the winter. When I stared it up the alarm went of intermittently. Put her in the water and after a few minutes it was fine. The oil was Yamaha 10w40 and the filter was a Mercury filter for the Merc 115 four. I could not let it rest so I brought home a mechanical oil pressure gauge from work and removed the sending unit and tested the oil pressure. No problem 75 psi at Idle. I removed the Merc filter and Installed a Baldwin B1400 the direct replacement for the Yamie filter. The gauge showed 75 at first and the dropped to as low as 20 psi with a constant fluxuation of pressure from 20 or so, to 75 psi. RPM or starting or stopping made no difference.(same as witht he Merc filter) After about 30 minutes or so of this oil pressure stabilized at 75 rock solid! I also noticed that their was more oil in the cam area when I remove the oil cap while she was running. I have plenty of motor experience and am stumped as to what could cause this. My friend said to try an OEM Yamaha filter and see what happens. Next, do I tear the motor down and attempt to find this very unusual problem or do I live with 30 minutes of agony while my motor finds it oil pressure every time I do an oil change!

Any and all advice welcome.

Thanks,

George

Those oil pressures look fine, the oil pressure alarm probably went on whilst the empty oil filter was filling up. An engine with those low hours should have no problems.

Yamalube 4M is available in 10W-30 and 20W-40. Using 10w-40 oil is not advisable. I would change the oil using the Yamalube 4M in 10w-30 weight and I would install a Yamaha 5GH-13440-00-00 oil filter element. There are great variations in the quality of oil filters and oil. It will save you money in the long-run to use quality products.
