Hi All. My balancer assembly has begun to make noise so I'm ordering a new one before it fails and takes out the powerhead. I'm well equipped with the Yamaha manual and have lots of automotive experience (Canadian Interprovincial license) and all the tools so I'm confident doing the work but have a few questions for those of you that have done a balancer on the F150. I have one of the early ones 63P-1042463 with the defective gears. The manual gives clear directions but asks that the flywheel assembly be removed. I have read the manual several times and I don't see why I can't line the flywheel at TDC with the cam marks indexed. This should be the correct position to install and index the the balancer marks? This is how I see it from reading the manual. The timing belt does not need replacement because it is in good condition and the engine hours are low (400 hrs)

I'd appreciate some advice from someone who has changed a few of these. Thanks in advance.

Bill

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

Suprised no one has had to change a balancer on one of these F150's. At any rate the part is ordered to be replaced on the weekend. About a1.5 hour job using the Yamaha shortcut (so the flywheel does not have to be removed.) The assembly lists at $1173 plus 2 seals and some sealant. I can post picks of old/new part if there is any interest.

Thanks to Rodbolt who has moved to the Yamaha prts forum.

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

I just bought a Lund Fisherman 1800 with a Yamaha F150. Took it out for the first time yesterday and noticed a bit of a whine that changed in pitch as the engine speed when up and down, only 95hrs on it! Did a google search on F150 whine and found out that the early F150s had this problem with the balancer. I talked with a Yamaha mechanic here in Alberta and he said that Yamaha would cover the repairs even though out of warranty, until he found out the boat was from the US!

So my options are to take the boat down to Montana and have a dealer repair it there or do it myself. I do have the Yamaha service manual but it doesn't just give a procedure to re & re of the balancer assy, did you need to remove the power head? To me it looks like all that you need to do is set the engine a TDC, remove the balancer bolts in the correct sequence, clean mating surface of sealer, replace seals and sealer and reinstall balancer assy, does this sound right?

If you have any pictures I'd love to see them, I will send you my email in a PM. Thanks, Greg

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

My F150 balancer transplant was a complete success. Quiet as new and leak free. In my case the old gears had no visual wear, but the old gearset has a much tighter interface than the new balancer gears. The new balancer gears have more clearance/backlash. The new part incorporates an oil spray tower on the upper bearing. No pictures but here is a great link as to what can happen:

I have the updated service information that allows for the balancer to be replaced without pulling the flywheel. PM me if you need it.

Special thanks to Rodbolt and Andy at SIM.

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

Hi Guys,

New to iboats , I have a 2004 63P 150hp with 324hrs that has just had the balancer replaced by the dealership .The motor vibrates and appears to be noisier than before it was replaced and only has done 10 hrs since replaced. Has any one else experinced this or know what may be the problem.

It is easy to verify that the balancer was installed correctly. I can send you the tech bulletin. If the replacement balancer unit is incorrectly timed it will cause a vibration, but not a noise.

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

That would be much appreciated,am worried that damage may occur. Shall buy a manual and check my self.
Would you know if the later unit with the oil feed fits this model.

The updated balancer with the lubricating tower is 63P-11500-03-00, and it will bolt right up.

Re: F150 Balancer Replacement

It would probably help in the future if you give model numbers and year of your engine. Don't forget every F150 is not the same.
