I have a 225 yamaha four stroke and everytime it the boat takes a hard hit, it will go into a safe mode. Everytime it does this i have to go into nuetral and get back on plane. Well I have taken it to a dealer and they looked at it and they could find nothing. They checked all the wiring and ran it on the computer etc. that has been a couple months ago and it is doing it more frequently now. Yamaha says i should take it to another dealer, well that is all well and good but i dont want to take it to another dealer and for them to find nothing and Me having to come out of pocket to pay these guys to ride around on my boat. I would take it out and let one of the yamaha tech's ride with me and show them what it does. However those motors only have a thirteen minute datalogger so if it happens and i cannot get back to the ramp in thriteen minutes and get a computer on it then it is pointless. Can anyone help I am beggining to get a bit frustrated with this and when I bought the boat I was never informed that this was going on...and it happened the second time out with the boat so I am not so sure that they just neglected to tell me that there was a problem so they could make a sale. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. It doesnt stop me from going fishing but if i have to come off plane fifteen times then that doesnt help the fuel mileage at all.

Re: F225 four stroke

what indicators and alarm codes do you get on the gauges?
you can also as to borrow the diagnostic lamp, it will display any acitive codes, most usual problem is the oil pressure switch will show over oil pressure.
the diagnostic test lamp is about 65 dollars and it will display any codes and the engine can be operated normally on the F225 with the lamp attached.

Re: F225 four stroke

any yamaha dealer should have one and can order one for you.
the way the F225 oil pressure switch is set up its not simply an on or off switch.
its a poteniometer and the ECU is looking for a specific range of voltage at a specific RPM. if the voltage from the switch does not match the map in the ECU it sets the alarm, usually over pressure.
test it very carefully.
the switch is about 325 dollars.
it is a pick off poteniometer,if your 5 volt reference or the grond is faulty the ECU will see it as a switch failure.
its not uncommon to replace a yamaha electrical part based on the lap top only to have the same symptom. garbage into the ECU equals garbage out and the ECU is rather stupid.
but the ECU will set a code for both low pressure and over pressure. either way if the pick off voltage from the switch does not match the computer map it sets a code to indicate a problem.
do you get a momentary audible alarm with the visual ?
yamaha also makes a test harness so you can monitor input and output voltages for both the 5V reference and the pick off voltage.
my 59 dollar radio shack multimeter can record and download later any paremeters I need.
for your issue I would use a cheap analog type meter and hook up to the 5 v reference and go slap some waves, if the 5V stays ok shift to the pick off wire and slap some waves.
an analog meter will react much faster than a digital

this aint rocket science by te way.
its basic digital logic
it takes an analog signal from a sensor and converts it to a digital signal and feeds it to a comparator circuit.
the ECU is looking for a specific feed back at any given RPM range. if it does not see it the comparator sets the alarm.
the only way to clear the flashing indicator should be by cycling the key switch.
the RPM reduction can be cleared by lowering the engine RPM to about 1000 or less. but without cycling the keyswitch the visual should remain.
to many techs make a simple system way to complex.
dont fall into that trap.
if this motor is still under warrenty and your dealer refuses to assist then call the yamaha consumer hotline and dont get mad nor sheety just explain the issue and ask if a tech rep would be avalible to assist in a test run.
you would be absolutly amazed at what the RTA can do.
I have seen them stay 3 days fighting an intermittant issue under warrenty.
just remember honey catches more flies than vinegar.
but do try to use a dealership that has at least one master tech.

Re: F225 four stroke

there is no audible alarm just the visual, you can clear the alarm just by switching the key off and turning it back on again. So would you use the yamaha test harness or would you just go to radio shack and get a multimeter. I have a freind of mine that used to be a yamaha mechanic so having him help us with the test would be no problem. I have called the yamaha consumer tech line and they told me they could not really help me. The tech at yamaha told me i would have to take it to another dealer and let them look at it. Well that is all good and well but i really am not a fan of paying another dealer to look at the motor for them to find nothing and then me have to come out of pocket five or six hundred dollars for these guys to go and test ride in my boat and on my gas. But i havent gotten ill with them because for the most part they have tried to give a little insight but yes i do have warranty until 2008

Damn rodbolt, I was going to tell him the same thing. We called it FADIC, full authority digital intergrated control. To be honest I never made the transition from analog and vacume tubes so I retired.
Plan to visit COLLINGTON soon, can I stop by and buy you a beer? regards fred

Re: F225 four stroke

Fred, quite possible :).
if this 225 is under warrenty then someone has to go ride with the laptop attached and find if the alarm is setting for over or under pressure.
keep any and all documents of the complaint and keep calling the hotline.
its odd that your getting an oil indicate with no alarm but not unheard of.
once the oil icon is flashing the keyswitch must be cycled to clear it.
however its not supposed to do it unless there is a problem.
usual problem is the oil pressure switch and yest its over 300 dollars for the switch and about 20 for the bag it comes in.
but like I say its not a simple on/off switch.
the diagnostic test lamp will retrive any codes the ECU sets but only one at a time and lowest number to highest if more than 1 code is set.
that means if you had a code 13 and a 15 you have to repair the 13 before you could read the 15.
your case will be looking for a code 39, the laptop can say if its over or under pressure but the diagnostic lamp will only display a code 39 for incorrect oil pressure switch signal.
keep pushing the issue and be civil and usually an RTA will get involved.
just try to be able to duplicate the problem.
so far I have had 5 or 6 of the switches fail.
