F25hp starting trouble

Or should I say F25hp trouble starting? My 2003 Yamaha 25hp 4 stroke, tiller, electric start, started in the water and then quit about 500 feet from the launch. It won't start when the throttle on the tiller is in the "Start" / slowest position. If the throttle is moved to a slightly increased position the engine starts without a problem. This is a recent problem, never any kid of trouble with it before. After the engine is started it will die if the throttle is moved down to the slowest "Start" idle position. It has a rough idle at very low rpms but runs fine with a bit gas. I don't have a tach on it. It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.

The boat had not been used for about 6 weeks. The 6.5 gal fuel tank was filled prior to last use and still contains 5.5 gals of gas. Marine Stabil was added and there is a Yamaha fuel/water separator filter, installed in May 2009

Are there any adjustments on the throttle or idle setting that might have loosened? Or should I be looking at the fuel or a fuel system obstruction?

Thanks for any help. I'm a complete novice with the marine engine.

Re: F25hp starting trouble

I have had the exact same problem. Have the Slow Idle Control Valve checked out. I believe it works like an electronic choke.

Good luck.
