http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4487162.stm

won't know anything until friday, but why would they even consider this? we finally have people trained to identify and remove these objects, and passengers have accepted what they shouldn't bring on a flight. why make a change for the worse? when was the last time you needed to travel with scissors?

this isn't a party issue, it's the federal govt just being stupid.

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

I know of people having their nail file/clippers confiscated in security, then being able to buy manicure kits and even craft knives from the shops on the aircraft side of security.

I once had a 6" shifting spanner taken from me at security - I wonder if they thought I was going to spend the 1 hour flight trying to dismantle the 737? As an ex-military pilot I felt bewildered - but hey, that's airport security and Government regulations.

The system is now so bad that recently some Qantas baggage handlers were arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling, and Schapelle Corby is currently serving 15 years in an Indonesian prison for possibly just not securing her boogie board bag.

Matttttttttttt, you've opened a can of worms here with no easy solution. Airport security is inconsistent. There is no real security in baggage handling and yet a pair of kid's plastic scissors can be confiscated from a six-year-old passenger. That is why the system is being reviewed.

the system is obviosuly not perfect and needs improvement. but if you think about the last several years since 9/11, things have come around. better security is in place (how much better is questionable), and they get us through security in a fair amount of time. this change just seems stupid. again, go buy your scissors when you get to grandma's place.

We usually fly with my wife's assistance dog. Invariably, some over zealous guard pats down the dog. I once asked if they wanted me to "lift her tail for a closer look." Only the other passengers laughed....

When all is said and done, airport security has done nothing to make flying more secure, and a new tax was imposed. Bottom line, it was a way to seperate you (and me) from the contents of our wallets and impose greater gov't authority that we would not have accepted otherwise. At the time I convinced myself it was being done with good intentions, now I am not so sure.

Henry Kissinger (Sec of Sate under Nixon) was right when he said the people would gladly surrender their constitutionally protected freedoms if they perceived a threat, either real or contrived. Unfortunately, it’s appearing more and more as if the threat we were sold was indeed contrived. Bill Richardson (Sec or Energy under Clinton) also said the exact same thing. And it was Benjamin Franklin that warned us about this… those that surrender their (personal) freedom in hopes of gaining security (from the gov’t) will have neither freedom nor security.

Personally,........

I think that Every passenger should be Required to carry-on a 10" Bowie Knife,.........

Maybe,... Just Maybe, the results of 9-11 would have been MUCH Different,.......

As it was,......1 of the planes Didn't make it to it's Intended destination...........

If those Brave Souls had a Way to Defend Themselves,......
Maybe they'd have Survived........
There is nothing wrong with America that was not caused by lawyers.

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

I have to admit I get confused with airport security. I just returned from a trip, and I found out in Chicago security on the return that a Bic lighter is not allowed. They did not find it either on the original flight out, or in Seattle on the return.

You are allowed to carry up to four books of matches, I was told. I guess I am not very creative, but I don't understand what threat the lighter posed that the matches didn't.

I think you can have sharp objects in checked baggage, however, so if you need the scissors, you can take them, but not on carry-on.

"When weapons are allowed back on board an aircraft, the pilots will be able to land the plane safely, but the aisles will be running with blood," said Corey Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the Association of Flight Attendants.

I hate people that know better trying to cause a scare. Jeez.

Fact is that you can break a bottle on board and make a pretty scary weapon in about, oh, two seconds.

PW2,

I think the lighter thing is that you can actually fill a container with all of that gas and get it to make a slight explosion. Not sure exactly, but just let one go in your pocket for a few seconds and then hit the sparker thing. You can get a little flash of heat going, so I am sure there are simple ways to get ALL of the energy stored in that little lighter to go all at once . . .

JK,

I fly a lot, and usually get upgraded to the front. There are always two fullsize bottles of wine. A Haut Medoc and a White . . . :D If I grabbed both of those bottles and slammed them together, I would probably end up with two fairly lethal weapons and they would still be in my hands ready for some slashing . . . :(

Sorry, to get all serious, I got your funnin', but I have been amazed that the scenario I describe above is not considered. Don't tell anybody though, because I still want the wine on board . . . ;)

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

Its nuts to relax it, make it more consistent yes.

I was flying out of Greenville SC a few years ago. The little old lady saw something 'suspisious' in my bag. When she showed me on the monitor, I told her it wasnt my bag. They took my bag apart, dirty underwear and all looking for the 'suspicious' item. They never found it.

It was the battery powered razor from my travelling companions bag. He thought it was pretty funny. I had lost my sense of humor. I always pack my carry on bag really tightly so that I dont have to check baggage. You havent lived until you try repacking your bags at the airport.

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

The point in making the change was that the security people have X amount of time to do their security check.

Did they want the security people spending their time looking for nail clippers or explosives?

They have opted for the explosives and real threats.

Also

PW2

THERE is NOT supposed to be a logic, it is supposed to be random so there is no pattern that the bad guys can plan around.

So far so good.

tomatolord

We should have never changed averything like we did, we should have just handed everyone a 45 when they boarded the plane and racial profiled all the terrorist looking suspects, I mean lets let grandma on the freeking airplane without a strip search. OK, Im a radical.

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

My wife is a patchwork fan, we were flying to Brisbane Via Sydney, the week before 9/11. Ann decided to do some patchwork and produced a pair of scissors about a foot long.
Just before the flight landed in Sydney she put the scissors back into the bag. As the plane taxied to the terminal we were asked to remain in our seats until the other passangers disembarked. Then a huge security guard marched down the aisle and escorted us off the plane.
Seems that the Adelaide security guys were hauled over the coals for missing the scissors.
All was well, she has the scissors back and we caught our connecting flight, but she doesent take so much as a piece of thread onto a plane now.

I went to Puerto Rico this Summer. On the way there they found a pair of sissors in my bag and confiscated it. Then on my way back, they found another identical pair that was in my shave kit. I had forgot about it. So the moral to my story would be to carry two.

I'm always carrying a pocket knife around and I feel nakid without one.

Re: FAA changes - WTF?

Has anybody heard of relationship profiling? This is profiling based on degrees of seperation. So let's say your cousin once hung out with Zarqawi's SIL. You go to the front of the line . . .

This is opposed to racial profiling, which I actually think is stupid. When we start stopping all Arab surnamed, black haired dudes, then they recruit blue-eyed, blond suicide bombers (yes, I think that is possible). Sooo with relationship profiling (yes, there is some big-brother stuff attached to that, but so is taking away my scissors) you only stop people that have a string attached to known terror connections. So if you're Carmen bin Laden, even though you wrote a book condemning your BIL, you get a pat down . . .
