Failure to start

Hi all

Finally got my boat in the water and running. Had a new trim tilt assembly put on, new water pump, and thermostat. She has a 1991 90 HP Mercury with great compression. Motored for an hour got her up to 3/4 throttle felt strong. Returned to the dock to get the truck and shut her off. 15 minutes later I run back to get her on the trailer, hold the key in to choke for ten seconds and then attempt to start.... will not get going. This goes on for a while until I finally have to throw a line over to my truck and pull her in. Drive home from the ramp about 10 minutes, wash the boat, and put the ear muffs on and turn the key without choking and she starts right up.

Did I flood the engine at the dock by holding the choke in???

When she would not start the fly wheel was turning, the motor was getting gas.

Any help????

Thanks

Re: Failure to start

I would say you flooded it out by choking a warm motor. I don't think 15 minutes is long enough to require choke. Next time I would try starting it without choke before and I am pretty sure it will start.

Re: Failure to start

One mistake I continually see people doing is failure to use the fast idle lever on their engines. It's there for a reason. Raise it a little when you start the engine. A touch of the key is generally all that's needed on a warm engine. But if the engine doesn't immediately start -- raise the lever. After sitting for 15 minutes a warm engine does not need choke. The fast idle lever serves the same purpose as stepping on the gas a little when starting an older carbureted car.

Re: Failure to start

I've been searching for diagnostic guidance for the same problem -- Engine will start ok when cold, but will not start when hot. A couple times this summer we've had to drift for an hour or so until the engine cooled down enough to start.

We have no fast idle control. We cannot control the choke.

We have a 1995 Sea Rayder (13.5') with a Merc Sport Jet 90.

I don't know if my problem is the same as bwj75's, but it sound similar.

Should be a button in the center of the bottom most part of the throttle lever. Push it in and then forward on the throttle...that should throttle it up and it not be in gear..
