Fair Price for a used Lower Unit 15 HP???

Hi,

I have a perfectly good lower unit from a 15 HP Evinrude. It does not have the driveshaft, but there is a good prop...and everything internally is in good shape. It would only need (suggested) a new impeller and it would be good to go.

Can I get some feeling for what I should ask for it?

Thanks, Chuck

where is the driveshaft?? you need to take the unit apart to install the driveshaft and it looks like that did not come apart for the removal... did it? if so the driveshaft is a key element in that part. If all parts are in working order I would not expect to get more than $20-$50 for it used and without a driveshaft in it to test spin.

JPGBU1; I don't remember the scenario as to what happened to the driveshaft. That's a puzzle; I was thinking the same thing.

Many years ago; I had a Johnny 15 HP long shaft. I wanted to convert it to short shaft. I picked up a used motor with a blown PH and pulled this lower unit off of it so I could convert mine to short shaft.

At least that's what my memory is telling me. Exactly how all the parts were swapped is a mystery. I still have the now short-shaft Johnny and it has it's original white painted lower unit...and I imagine it has this short shaft driveshaft in there.

That's about all I can remember.

Can I get a second opinion on the driveshaft removal on a 9.9/15 HP OMC engine?

As I stated in the thread-starter post...I have a spare lower unit (w/o Driveshaft) and want to sell it.

Does the driveshaft just slip in; or is dis-assembly of the lower unit required?

I just finished reading The Machinists post about short shaft/long shaft conversion...and as detailed as his information is...it does not seem to answer this specific question. http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC-Converting_shafts.htm

Thanks, Chuck

With the waterpump removed, the driveshaft just slips in. In the past I have purchsed several good 15HP lower units on Ebay for around $125. each, but they came with driveshafts.

Laings has their used units priced on their website, but they are tested and come with a limited warranty: http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpage5.htm

Incorrect, the splines of the driveshaft shove down into the pinion gear in which case nothing needs to be taken apart. I just bought a 20 hp gearcase with no shaft, water pump or prop for $200 but they are less common.
