Fast accel

Starting a new thread as we were getting off-topic on another. I have a 90 hp Honda on my boat. It was originally equipped with a 60 Johnson. When we made the conversion, I asked that I get a Honda flush mount, like the OMC that was already there. Long story short, the OMC is still there. Anyway, I have problems starting this motor in the past - unlike others with the same motor - and I am wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I do not have a Honda control box and thus no fast accel (or free accel or whatever you like to call it). I am wondering, does this little lever control the throttle cable, only in minor increments, and not a different cable altogether? I am able to advance the throttle on my OMC control box without engaging it in gear if I hold a button down while advancing the arm. Is this the same thing?

Re: Fast accel

MajBach,

THe "warm up feature" is just as you described it on a binnacle mount, such as yours. You push in the button and advance the throttle. The button disengages the gear shift mechanism.

The warm up feature usually only allows you to advance the throttle up to about half of what it would go if in gear.

There is no third cable.

I believe your honda is carbureted, thus a warm up feature would be nice. Also, I believe your Honda has accelerator pumps, in the carbs. It woiuld be nice to pump the throttle before starting.

Re: Fast accel

No accelerator pumps so pumping the throttle won't help.
Also keep in mind that the choke only seems to be needed until the motor fires. The faster you release the choke the better, or so it seems on mine. The fastest RPM while not in gear on mine is 2-2500RPM approx.

Majbach keep us informed on the outcome.

Skinny: I have followed many of your posts here and you seem to be an authority. But are you sure about the accelerator pump? Obviously I have tried several methods over the past 4 years on starting this motor and I have definately noticed if I pump the throttle 3 times first, apply the choke and leave throttle a small amount open when i turn the key, i get better results than if I do not pump the throttle. If I simply advance the throttle a small amount and apply the choke (essentially what you do), I can turn the key over for at least 20 - 30 seconds before the motor even begins to catch. Hmmm, something not right about the way this motor starts and it's been this way since new.
