Fast clicking.

Hi there. I am having a problem with starting the boat. When I turn the key I just get a fast clincking noise. The engine doesn't even try to spin. I am not sure what to look for. I looked through the adults only thread for starting issues but it doesn't seem to address this. It talks about if it just clicks, but nothing about multiple fast clicking. Does anyone have any idea where I should start to look to isolate this problem? Thank you in advance for your help.

By the way, it is a 87 mercruiser 120.
