Fast Idle Question - '89 Capri with 85 HP Force

When I pull out the control handle for a fast idle, the handle seems disconnected from the throttle cable which will not move until the handle is pushed fully forward when the throttle cable moves a very small amount. This requires a little force and springs back when released. I believe that the handle should move the cable as soon as it is pushed forward, no? At any rate I cannot get the motor to fast idle the way it is set up right now.

What rpm's is the idle at now?

Thanks, I'll try and track that down. I do not have tach on the boat so cannot tell and I'm having trouble getting it started anyway. When it has started it will run for a while choked and then dies. It does not race. I did run it up in gear on the muffs but, of course, only for a short while. That is why I would like to be able to rev it up in neutral.

Properly set up, you will only get to around 2000 RPM in the fast idle setting.

When improperly set up, especially if the idle stop screw is in too far (in an effort to keep the engine from stalling in neutral) all the slack for fast idle position will be removed. It is essential that carbs and timing are correctly synchronized and the control cables are set properly.

However, before you do anything else, check the compression ratio on all three cylinders. You will never get a sick engine to run well no matter what you do.

If compression ratio is high and equal on all cylinders, then go to the top of the forum and watch the video. Also read the sticky in Force and Chrysler FAQ on synchronizing carbs and timing.

Pretend everything is set incorrectly and start from scratch. Set everything to factory specs. It is not difficult and should take less than an hour.
