I just spent half a day on the FCC's website trying to liscense my new GMRS handhelds. All went well until i got to the FEE phase....
They charge$80.00!!!!
Somebody tell me this is bogus. This cannot be right!

I did try to pay it anyhow, thinking i could just email a protest and get a check for $75.00 back maybee ,or an email stating i didn't need to pay anything. I tried using their "secure" online meathod, but my computer front door software blocks it, stating it is far from secure.....IOW, it smells a rat also.
Does anyone have/use GMRS under license? I know many use them without bothering to obtain a ticket, but I hold an amateur radio ticket now, and want to keep it legal anyhow. but 80 BUKS?!
Seems a bit steep for a ticket my taxes should have already paid for.

Re: FCC GMRS Question:

Did you look here ? From what i read the fee is correct if its a GMRS radio. If its a FRS there is no fee.

Rut row. We bought my FIl a set of these for his birthday. They live on Richland Chambers and the MIL wants to be able to contact when fishing. Something tells me he won't pay the fee either.

Re: FCC GMRS Question:

Yes I have mine too KB1JOI :)

I agree $80 is way too high. I doubt it will be enforced. Even if they collected 80 per person I doubt that would pay for the man-power to enforce it.

Re: FCC GMRS Question:

I bought a pair of them also but have only used them with FRS.
For family outings we found that it doesn't matter what frequency or sub audio you pick there is going to be someone else with the same settings. We found that out during the western wa fair this year.

Which is why I bought the GMRS.. didnt expect a $80.00 fee .. foiled again! Even though it is only 16 dollars per year. Thats not bad I guess.

Looks like only one license is required for the group and they are the control operator.

"The FCC grants five-year renewable licenses for GMRS Systems. The individual licensee is responsible for the proper operations of the licensed GMRS system at all times."

btw 12Footer
Your not alone. I go hot and cold on the ham bands. For the first time in 30 years I was without a hf rig in the house for 3 long weeks!
Went out and picked up a old boat anchore Kenwood TS520 just to have it here LOL
Still haven't hooked up a antenna... But I can! :D
