Hi guys, say i have a quick question, sorry to bother you, and i know i need to get a manual and i will soon, I started into older outboards with a FD-12, since then i have been fortunate to be able to buy a whole trailer load of them mostly jonny/rudes with a handful of others as well, get this,, for $200 , i am in heaven, many complete motors , like 15 or more and many upper and lowers too as well as a ton of new parts, like piston rings etc, the local small engine shop got out of the marine business so i got it all, right now i am focusing on getting some 18's up and going, my question to you is, are the impeller and lower unit seal kits the same on the FD-12's and the FD-15's and would i just tell FD-12 or FD-15 to the OMC guys ? i have 2 complete FD-12's and 3 FD-15's , and a rude or two 18's, and more lower units that i can count. It is like a dream come true for me as i just love this stuff, i have a couple of older ones too, sometime i will sit down and take stock of it all. But right now i would like to use the 18's , i am thinking a matched pair on each of my boats. thank you for your help

An FD-12 is a 1958, an FD-15 is a 1964. There are many similarities, like the water pump, and there are differences, like the fuel system and thermostat cooling & fiberglass hood.

What you really should do is get yourself a few parts books for the most popular models you will be working on. They aren't expensive and will be worth their weight in gold when ordering parts.

Secondly, if there is a local dealer in your area, become familiar with them and learn to be at home when you visit the parts department. Most of them won't bite, but a few will.

hahaaha no i am not married right now, i am engaged tho hahaha i made her say "i love jonny/rudes" hahhahah i was thinking the FD-15;s were '61's as the fd 12 is a 58' the last yr with no fuel pump, and pressurized 2 line fuel tanks , i have 3 of them, tanks that is, and fd-13 were from 1959, fd-14 1960 and fd-15 then would be 1961, i need to order the lower unit seal kit and impellers , they look the same, just trying to make sure

Yer right, it is a '61. I must have been looking at the list cross-eyed. But my eye doc did say I'm going blind. Or my eye-balls are coming apart or something of that nature. Heck, I can see a lot better than I can hear. And other stuff. The "Golden Years", they say.

Re: Fd-12-fd15

I am afraid the local dealer has little patience for finding parts for anything older then a few years, the last time i was there they told me to give up and buy a new motor. well a new motor doesn't look good on my '59 FeatherCraft , or my 50's era wooden cabin cruiser, not to mention thousands of dollars for a new one,i tried to buy some double fuel line in october and he said it is off season i can't get it till spring i said well order me some and in the spring he said oh we may not be able to get it now , i said well call me , so far nothing i have a pair of 40's too one is a '61 and another a '65 but they have the electramatic trannys and i will wait till i know more about them before i try to get them running, but i have a ton of stuff for the 18's and just need the stuff that wears out , i have a few power heads and a 18 rude or two uppers too , and a lot of others 5.5's a 6 , a couple 10's , if i had a wife the 62 czech scooter in the spare room would have to go too i am sure hahahha
