Re: Fear the worse, loud banging sound comingfrom the engine

I hope we figured out the problem. We installed the new lifter and it only soaked in oil for about an hour instead of all night. We tighten the rocker arm, then about 30 seconds it would start tapping again. So, we did this about 5 times. We think it was over tighten and it lift the lifter raised, and would not get any compression. Last night, on the reused head gasket, it had 125 psi compression with the rocker arm loose. Hopefully, the reason it wouldn't crank is the timing needed adjusting. I'm getting the heads redone and one valve changed and will update it soon.

I can't find my huge service manual, ( my wife cleaned up the books),

Where are the timing marks on my 1996 mercruiser 4.3 and what degrees should it be?
