Your Human Not Super Man.
"WE ALL" make stupid mistakes, if this bothers you now, then internally you made the wrong choice.

Live and learn young grasshopper

As for the rest of the posters, how many time have "YOU" screwed up and looked to the rest of the collective for answers.
(Yes collective, if you are posting here it is a group effert not an individual effert)

Heh... No question about that.

Hey, he DID post the story and ask for feedback. I'm not really sensing a lot of judgement, just the opinions that he asked for.

Re: Feel like I let fellow boater down?

Absolutely your call.
On a day where a boater helped me start my boat I much more remember the guy's kindness than I do the day out on the water-
However, If you had a bad gut feeling that something wasn't quite right and you turned him down, that I can understand. You were the only one there and you know how it felt at the time. I admire you putting yourself up here with the possibility for ridicule. Don't sweat it now; JB's right, you have the most info. If you think you messed up; do different next time.

He did get bashed around alittle above and beyond a few times IMHO.

He obviously wanted help, but what kind of help is unclear. I would have offered to go to the station and get a little gas in a can for him. I would not have left my boat unsecured so that I could take his boat somewhere. I would certainly have asked him what kind of help he wanted. He may have just needed to borrow a cell phone to call his wife or son, you never know.

I think that is in part because he left out plenty of details that would help members understand what went on. He hasn't been back to answer questions. If you are going to do that then it is best sometimes to keep things to yourself

i would have helped i know what its like to be stranded,me and my son was fishinh and a boat nearby blew a horn one time i looked over and didn't see anything like waveing arms so we kept fishing then a little while we kept hearing splashing what they were doing was pitching the anchor and then pulling the rope so the boat will move they were about 30 yards from a train bridge they got to the bridge and one of the men climed to the top of the bridge and started walking pulling the boat on a line thats when i knew they were broke down i told my son pull up anchor and i went over too them they spoke little english im in a 15 ft tracker with a 8 hp yamaha they were in a 16 ft fiberglass with a 150 merc the battery died on them they tossed me a line and i towed them in they were some happy campers. it took me a while but we were not that far from the launch . dont leave a fellow boater stranded you never know when you will need help.

Re: Feel like I let fellow boater down?

I would've helped. Yes, I even help stupid people. I have run out of gas on the water. It is humiliating and fortunately I have vessel assist and was able to handle it 'on my own', but I would never leave someone stuck. I don't know all of the details, but I know you put yourself before and old man and that's below my definition of integrity.

Regardless if it is his fault. You can give him crap about stupid of a move this was, but you just can't leave him there.

Wes this not the dock he launched from? This story is a bit confusing, but then again it appears to be written by an a-hole.

Re: Feel like I let fellow boater down?

I concur that there isn't enough detail to give an opinion one way or another.
I've been in a similar situation....
I launched my little 12' 10hp on a lake, docked it up and tried to start the engine .... no luck. I tried for what felt like hours, then one guy came down and helped me take the carb off, strip it, free the float and put it back together again. No expectancy of anything but a thank you. I saw him again later that day at the campsite and I gave him a bottle of wine for his troubles and he was almost embarassed to accept! Really a good samaratin if ever there was one! :)
A few weeks later, we were camping at another lake and a guy launched a larger boat.
The camper next to us told him not to bother and that he'd never get that big boat through the channel onto the main lake, even though the launcher stated he had a 2' draft. (You know the the type? "I've been around boats all my life blah, blah, blah")
I asked him if he'd like to come out in my 12'er just to check out the channel and he was shocked that I'd even offered.
Turned out the channel was 3' and we took his boat the second time, with me at the bow, watching for sunken obstacles with no issues.
He offered to pay for my gas, but I declined stating that my little 10hp would have used about a cup of gas! lol
All 4 of us (my wife, I, the guy and his wife) had a blast for the rest of the week, sharing boats and campfires and Smores! lol
When we got back, the guy who said it couldn't be done was surprisingly quiet!
A few days later, I was at the other end of the lake, just enjoying the beach and a family were launching a little 10" with a 6hp and it wouldn't start. The father was getting visibly tired and frustrated pulling the rope, so I offered to help. Turned out that the carb was clogged, so I stirpped the carb, fixed the float and they went on their merry way! (Karma eh?) It took me a couple of hours, but the smile on his sons face was enough!
Just thought I'd share!

Re: Feel like I let fellow boater down?

So last night I was out with my old 17 foot 80's open bow, out board.

It ain't much, but it's all I can afford on a fixed income. I was launching, and it just died. I tried to ask a guy for help, but he just said "sorry", and left. I wanted to ask him for a hand after he put his boat in the water, but he was too busy getting out. So I put a spell on the lake to make the fish think about spawning, instead of eating, and another to make this guy realize that he just shut out an old man with three weeks to live.

(Every story has two sides.)

every story has two sides, but yours, like the OP's, isn't a story yet because you haven't told the first side. In yours, just what kind of "help" were you looking for? A 25' tow back to the ramp? A carb job? Take you fishing all day in his boat? And the OP's story didn't clearly say what the "old man" was asking for.

Whenever a "would you help" question comes up here, the overwhelming majority says, yes they would give reasonable assistance. The operative work is reasonable, and that has to take in dozens of circumstances, including the skill, ability and equipment of the helper, the time factor, real safety concerns and the helplessness of the stranded guy.

Hey OP, we need you clear things up a bit. Yeah, ya got bashed pretty hard but I think more of us would be on your side if we could figure out what exactly was requested of you.

Yep pull his boat with my wagon.

Ayuh,.... So yer sayin' the guy launched his boat, 'n It's outa gas, or his tow vehicle,..??

If the Boat is outa gas,... Tuff,... shoulda Thought of that earlier...

If his truck was blockin' the launch,... Ya, I'd drag 'em outa the way, to a gas pump, if Close by...

Or are ya sayin' he wanted to put his boat, on Yer wagon, to get to the gas pump,..??

well , thats' a horse of a different color. i'm retracting my comment . you're ok . but in my case , the stations' less than a 1/4 mile away , so it'd take me about a half hour and i'd be back on my boat fishing . sooner or later it comes back around.

Re: Feel like I let fellow boater down?

So did you offer any alternative types of help? ie call for assistance, tow his boat by water or leave your son watching your boat while you all went for gas?(you don't say how old your son is). I do think towing his boat with your auto would be an unreasonable request. I also think leaving your boat unattended at the ramp would be a bad idea too. I don't know why your last post was a one liner to all the questions posed because that one line doesn't mean you did all you could reasonably do to help a fellow boater

Yep pull his boat with my wagon.
