anyone wacth the CNN blip about the fiasco going on in Hope Arkensaw?
they would not let the cameras in even with a congressional escort.
seems they paid just over 300 mil for almost 11,000 3 bedroom mobile homes, the 25K a month rent is for 2 years with a 2 year optional extension. the drawback. the trailers are sinking in the mud and cracking so FEMA ordered some 80,000 jacks and is going to lay 6 million dollars worth of gravel on the mud to store the trailers even when the fema man was reporting they may have to just dispose of the trailers anyway.
all Bush/Cheney jokes aside, who the ell is in charge and why is chertoff not been fired? its not Bush or Cheneys fault but it is their RESPONSIBILITY. that I can lay directly on them. thats where the buck is supposed to stop.
while I do admire Loyalty it holds no truck if whomever I am loyal to is not able to do the job. then it makes both look foolish.

wonder how much a contractor is gonna charge to jack up 11,000 trailers and how long will it take and how often will it need to be checked/re-jacked.
I can see 450 million dollars worth of scrap aluminium.

Is anyone really suprised when the incompetence of the goverment makes headlines?

I am not.

The only way we can end this is to hold them personally accountable. i.e. fines and salary withheld if your incompetence costs the taxpayers millions. Right now these guys get a blank check and a golden parachute if they screw up.

Ken

heycods
now dont start getting all liberal on us.
no, the best thing to do is allow them to sit and rot then pay a contractor to haul them off and scrap them. that way they can be properly written off and the books balanced.
funny thing is the FEMA is a cabinet level entity and the head reports directly to,and is responsible to, the president of the US. why isnt the president doing something?

Re: FEMA again

And to think some of you all STILL want government to take over health-care!

FEMA, as with all government agencies is comprised mostly of career bureaucrats who remain government employees no matter who's President and what party is in charge. The majority of these employees are UNION. Public employees now comprise the largest pocket of unionised workers in America, numbering almost 50% of all unionised workers. The vast majority of these union employees vote Democrat.

So Rod, the next time the government fracks up, it's most likely a unionised Democrat had a hand in it. In the current political climate, I do not discount for one minute that some of these frack-ups are intentional, with the intention of causing embarrassment and undermine the current administration. The rest is just incompitence.

kagee
good thing there are no republicans in the bureaucracy and in the unions.

good thing chertoff is a staunch republican and answers directly to the president, keeps FEMA straight.
and this admin needs no help to embaress themselves.
they do a good job without it.
but I do agree that, after working with them, a lot of the midlevel govt workers are just there for the paycheck and the daily mission is CYA and dont make the boss look bad.

Re: FEMA again

The Republican HR select committee has completed its evaluation - there's a story about it at cnn.com

The panel found that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was "detached" and that then-Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown was "clueless," Shays said.

In one of the excerpts, Chertoff was chided for executing critical responsibilities "late, ineffectively or not at all."
...
"In many respects, our report is a litany of mistakes, misjudgments, lapses and absurdities all cascading together, blinding us to what was coming and hobbling any collective effort to respond," one of the draft excerpts said.
I'll bet lunch that the report nowhere blames congress for restructuring FEMA under the HOMELAND SECURITY tent.
Congrss never makes mistakes.

Re: FEMA again

I know exactly what the problem is.

I have been to FEMA training classes. Everything they do is an acronym. They even have acronyms for their acronyms. I think that it is confusing them when they try to talk to each other. It takes to much time to figure out how to speak FEMA that they forget other duties.

Re: FEMA again

This is indicative of Gov't managing anything. Not an indication of what's wrong with this administration. And some of you want them to manage your healthcare too . . .
