Hello,

I have what I think is a 1956 evinrude 5.5 fisherman that I just got. A few questions on it. The guy told me to run it at 50:1 is that sound accurate on this motor? And it had the 2 speed control knobs on the front of the motor. I can't really figure out what those mean or do. I don't feel that my motor is putting out as much power as it can. What should I set those knobs to for full throttle and what do they do? Thank you so much

Re: Few questions

My guess is ratio should be 24 to 1. Those needles are high and low speed needles. Check out "Top Secret Files" here. There is a very easy explanation of how to adjust them correctly, so you don't run your motor too rich....or more importantly....to lean(which will eventually destroy your motor because of lack of lubrication).

Re: Few questions

That model motor is actually a 16:1 motor. High speed is 3/4 turn out and low speed is 1 1/2 turns out.

Re: Few questions

The very top thread on the Johnson Evinrude Forum here. There's a lot of good info there as far as waking up a sleeping outboard, getting parts, doing work on them and the like. We had a great member here who was kind enough to take the time and put the secret file together for all those to benefit

Re: Few questions

You know what's funny though, back in my early days of boating, I ran an old 5.5 like that on 50:1 and it survived. It must have been worn out enough to where the lesser oil didn't hurt it. LOL:D
