FORT LAUDERDALE - Familiar names dominate the 2003 list of J.D. Customer
Satisfaction Award winners announced this morning at the Fort Lauderdale
International Boat Show.

Winners in the engine categories were:

2-STROKE OUTBOARDS - Evinrude, followed by Yamaha and Mercury.

4-STROKE OUTBOARDS - Yamaha, for the second consecutive year, followed by
Honda and Mercury.

After receiving honorable mentions a few years ago, and a fairly close
second place last year, FICHT is now #1 in customer satisfaction survey.

JD Powers is about as crooked as a dog's hind leg.

Evinrudes have not been called Ficht since Bombardier redesigned the system and started calling it DFI or Direct Injection.

Sour grapes, Maj?

As I understand it JD Powers reports on the perceptions of satisfaction by new owners (within X? days/months) of purchase. To me that is worthless. Now if their reports were based on experience after 5 or 10 years I might pay attention.

JB

Yep, I agree that Evinrude is using Direct Injection to describe their motors. However, it is like the VRO pump that hasn't been made since 1991, but it's a household word like Kleenex, JetSki, Xerox, etc. when used to describe things.

Re: FICHT #1 in JD Powers survey

JD powers is just another sales scam. I often wonder how much it costs to list with them
just like the salesman telling you you can troll all day on a thimble full of gas and cruise home without changing plugs on your HPDI.
but that is just my opinion :) I would never purchase anything on a write up for JD or consumers I like to go touch it and feel it for myself. maybe take the tech out for a beer then ask questions.most sales reps have no clue as to how it works as most jounalists should not do tech write ups.if its my 17,000 on the line I would like to be assured that it will at least outlast the payments.outboards should have to follow the same lemon laws that automobiles do. that would get rid of a lot of the companies letting the consumer be the durability testers and let the companies foot the bill.
there again just another opinion
its hard to tell a customer that if he goes 30 miles offshore and trolls for tuna for 3-4 hours that the only way he is coming back on both engines is to replace the plugs. not easy on a 26 jupiter with twins and 7 ft seas.

sorry for the long vent. but today I have to go fight another pair of 200 HPDI that foul plugs when trolling. the yamaha service rep told the guy just dont troll.
I was standing on the dock when that was said

Re: FICHT #1 in JD Powers survey

You do not "list" with JD Powers in their customer satisfaction surveys. Just as with the automobile survey, JD Powers sends out multi page forms to a number of registered owners. The questions are given a 1 to 10 range meaning excellent to **** poor. There are no "trick" questions, each one is asking a specific opinion of the consumer. Some questions are:
Did you have problems?
How many?
Were they fixed to your satisfaction?
Did any reoccur?
How would you rate your dealer?
Rate the motor on:
starting
fuel economy
smoothness
power
smoking
noise

The marine survey asked about the boat and the motor. I understand they received back around 10,700 responses from folks who bought 2002 and 2003 rigs from Feb 2002 up thru Jan of '03.

JD Powers makes their money by selling the info to whoever wishes to purchase it. Let's say you are a manufacturer who did not place in first, but want to know what your customers said about your product. Or you might want to know how your competitors product were rated. You can buy the info on the who survey or you can buy just the responses about your product. The first place company has to pay to use Powers name in their ads, if they want to use it in their advertising. There is no 2nd place advertising allowed. Since they have the reputation and know how for conducting surveys of customer satisfaction, other industries use them also.

Think what you will of JD Power, but it's the ONLY one out there with any credibility.

It is seen as the industry leader in providing accurate feedback of customer perceptions.

Most people believe or disbelieve survey results based upon their own personal biases.

Yes, JD Power figured that out too!

Interesting results.

PSSSST, Hey Rodbolt: Whisper to your customer that he should try SYNTHETIC 2 STROKE OIL to solve his sparkplug fouling problems!

JD Powers is better than believing the mfg glossy ads or salesman. It's just like the TCW oil certification ordeal. On the otherhand, I also know some "cult" boat owners who wouldn't admit their expensive rig ever had a problem to friends or JD Powers.

Being a long time OMC supporter I'm glad to see the favorable survey. Thanks for posting.

Just my opinion here, but I think Merc and Yamaha have met there match, and are going to take a back-seat when comparing apples-to-apples on these newer DFI's......... :)

Many 4 stroker guys are in denial on 2 stokes too. I've been running a Yammy blt Mariner 4 stroke 7 yrs and will going back to a modern 2 stroke next time around...hopefully an OMC clone.
