The new lawn mower is rusting so fast it will be junk before its paid for. What can I do to keep bolts from rusting shut? What can I do to keep the underside of the deck from rusting? I tried sanding, priming and painting but the rust just bleeds through the paint. The bolts are rusting and I keep twisting the heads off. Its a toro LX500

Thanks

Well, you could clean and paint the underside of the deck with a product like POR-15 http://www.por15.com/. I have restored many old cars using this product and it's tough as nails if you follow the instructions. The nice part is you can paint right over any rust once you remove the loose stuff.

Replace any fasteners that are prone to rust wasting and break-off with stainless hardware.

Remove the rust that you can and auto-undercoat it.

Phosphoric acid will kill it, and leave a coating.

Krylon makes a spray paint that kills the rust and leaves an auto primer over it. Find out about it Here

I agree with Coors. The stuff is commonly referred to as a rust converter. knock off any loose stuff and blistering paint, apply the rust converter, 24 hrs later rinse off any excess, let dry then paint.

The stuff is available at automotive paint stores. It is handy to have around.

Ace Hardware has it too. It is also used to clean the alum. fins on your a/c unit.

Use any of the rust converters (Naval Jelly is one) described above then slobber Penatrol oil all over the area to be treated, let it dry at least 24 hours then top off with a coat of Rust-O-Leum. I been using this method on trailers that get sunk in salt water for 37 years.
