Outboard ____________________

Is the correct answer ENGINE? If so why?

or

Is the correct answer MOTOR? If so why?

We go involved in a discussion today about this and I decided to ask the "boat educated" masses.

Just to confuse the issue IMO it is an outboard motor that contains an engine.

I've always heard it called motor.
Tried to copy and paste but that didn't work.
Proof is Attwood Motor Hood Cover.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Fill in the blank - Settle or start a discussion.

Motorcars have engines (except the electrics, they have motors) and Motorcycles have engines, why can't outboard motors have engines?

Because they burn chemical energy to make mechanical energy I will always call them engines.

The one on the bow uses electricity from an external supply, so i call it a motor.

Yabut: Rockets burn chemical energy, why are they motors? Because they don't turn it into mechanical energy.

Oh yeah! Then why are turbojets called engines? Because. . . .well. . . because I said so, that's why.

Oh, yeah!! Well my greatgrandbuddy can whip yours!!

Outboard motor - contains an engine, transmission, and prop or impeller.

And that is the correct answer unless I am wrong!

JB gave the official Air Force definition. It is almost verbatim what my Dad a pilot always says. d:)

Outboard motor is the thing that propels your boat - which includes an engine, gearcase, and propeller. An "outboard engine" is the noisy thing on top of your outboard motor.

My driveshaft still hurts from the last time I got involved with this question.

I'll just call it the "thingy that makes it go".
