Every time I fill the gas tank on my boat -- when it gets full and kicks off the auto-fill nozzle -- gas flies back out of the filler tube and the vent hole on the side of the boat.

It is a 40 gallon tank and I have only ever filled it on the trailer.

Suggestions?

John

Re: Filling my gas tank

I have been doing a lot of research on gas tanks, gas fills and vents lately with my "permanent tank" project. I found that boat fuel systems are not designed like car systems. Boat systems were not designed to kick off the auto nozzle at a gas station. From what I read and have been told by a Perko rep, marina nozzles generally are not the automatic off type, and because some boats have tanks that hold hundreds of gallons, they pump fuel much faster. Boat fuel systems are meant for you to manually fill and watch the tank. So I'm not surprised that by the time the auto shut off is triggered, the system is so full that the little kick forces some gas out the vent and fill.

Of course, I could be full of it. :p

I had a Larson that the vent came out the side of the boat where you would stand if you were filling it up at a gas station. I had gas blown all over my shirt more then once.

I have that problem when filling my boat,200 gals at a time.Problem is,I'm filling at a marina.Best thing to break down gas on water is Dawn dish soap.Works in a flash.I keep a couple of bottles on board, the marina has them at the pumps too!

Suggestions?

Yes... If you know that you have a 40 gallon tank, and the Gauge is reading half full, when you get to app. 18 gallons slow down, till you hear it gurgling in the fill pipe.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><<><><><><><> <>
BUT if you have big tanks like Prockvoan, the flow is like at a truck stop, it is coming out the pipe quickly. You have to slow down 10 or more gallons before it is full.
I have seen Yachts filled from tank trucks, and they use the same principal. :)

I think that marine gas tank vents are under engineered. I think it is a near universal problem that they don't fill well, either at the dock or the filling station.

prockvoan says dawn breks the gas down the best:)

Maybe we should concentrate on not spilling the gas, instead on "breaking down" the allready spilled gas. Instead of two bottles of soap you could bring a device that sticks on the side of the boat so you can catch the overflow.

We all like to eat the fish.

Boomyal
You got a point, in the last seconds on a total fill up the vent is blocked by gasoline.

Your not breaking down anything it just makes it disperse so you don't get caught poluting. I say get the vent thing that keeps gas from poping out of the vent. Attwood fuel surge thingie. I got me one.
