Re: Finally got her out!!! ....new issues...

Hey Poweraddict,

I had a similar idle problem with my boat last year. I was fine at cruising speeds but my engine would idle rough and occasionally die when idling (sucks for docking in the no wake area). I ended up adjusting my idle setting only to find that my carb gaskets were ancient and started leaking after adjusting. That ended my boating last year because gas pouring out of carb is bad and I had never dealt with a carb before.

This year I learned about carbs and rebuilt it. Now it idles perfect and no gas leaks. Definetly worth the $30 and probably not much harder then sucking your gas out (although, from the sound of it, you might have to do that also.)

thanks guys.

I have a marine store I go to for parts. But a Napa is closer if I can go there for parts.

If I have a leaky trim hydraulic line or something of the sort, I'd have to go to a marine store for that though right?

But I will rebuild the carb, I hope I can go to the Napa for that.

Make sure you check it with the trim rams all the way down and in.

by that do you mean to make sure the drive is all the way down?

do I use the pump for adding outdrive oil to add oil to the trim system?

Also, it says to use straight 20W oil....do they even still have such a thing?

I have discovered that the same pump for the outdrive oil works well for the trim pump as well.

(Same pump - not the same oil. ;) )

I recently went through the same thing with my dad's boat. Here's the label says:

I asked around and could not find 20 wt oil. I suspect either 30 wt or 10w30 would work. (I ended up buying a new style pump for his boat, so the point was moot).

well, i used 10w-20, still a 20 weight oil, I suppose that will suffice.

I ran it up and down and up and down and up and down etc, and I cannot find a leak, all the hoses and everything look great. Any other options? Or could it have just been low, and sloshing around in the water made it low in the reservoir?

Maybe it's possible it just slowly leaked out over a period of time.... if you have filled it correctly, (see picture below), then I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it periodically to see what it does.

Well, I guess I do have a leak, when we got back in today, the trim stopped working on the ramp.

Can a power steering type dye leak detector be added to help find a leak?

Well, if it is not in the boat, then it is outside. Do you notice a light sheen of oil when you are docked or anchored?
