Finally got my new motor

I finally got my motor on friday and put about 8 hours on it.

I got a rebuilt 66 Johnson 20 pull start.

It ran great i had it out all weekend, With me my friend and my two dogs it pushed us at 15 and me alone i got up to 24 on my gps.

Anything I need too keep an eye out for besides lower unit oil and water pumping?

Great old motor. Not sure what you mean by rebuilt, but if it has new points, coils, condensers and a rebuilt carb, new impeller and new oil in the lower unit, just enjoy it! At the end of the season, drain and replace the lower unit oil, spray some fogging oil in the carb and cylinders. Milky oil or water in the lower unit indicates a leaking seal somewhere. Make sure to replace the washer/seals on the drain and vent screws when you change the oil. After 2-3 seasons, replace the impeller. That's about it. With care, it should last another 40+ years.

Congrats on the new motor. Sounds like a winner. I would keep an eye on ebay for a OMC service manual, and start reading. Enjoy your motor!

Yes it has new points, condensors, carb, impellar and oil. I bought it from a guy who rebuilds the old OMCs

Does anybody know If there is something to hold the motor in the up position for towing on the trailer? I cant seem to figure it out.

And It seems like the throttle should twist further but ive never owned one before so i dont know..

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

As close as that is to the '67 20 I had, you may be referring to the fact that the handle twist mark doesn't seem to line up with the sleeve markings from "twist to twist" in ea. direction. Mine never did. I just checked everything on the linkage, made sure all worked fine from idle to WOT, figured out where it liked to start, then forgot about the other.

I dont know much about outboards yet but what should it sound like at WOT? Even though we were clippin along pretty well it didnt really seem to me that it was ever really "screamin".

I took off the cowling and watched the little roller that goes along the circle to control the throttle. How close should the roller get to the edge?

I didnt try it on the lake but with the motor off i noticed that at WOT I could move the roller maybe 1/2 to 3/4 an inch further with my finger but the throttle wont twist any further.

Look in the throat of the carb and twist the throttle. The butterfly should just start to open when the roller hits the line on the cam. Look for slight movement in the linkage when the roller hits that mark. At full throttle, the butterfly at the back of the carb should be wide open.
