Finally got my thermostat, now I'm overheating.

Hey guys, my boat had been fouling plugs every so many trips out. You guys suggested a new thermostat. I opened it up and there wasn't one there. I had a marine parts guy order me everything that goes inside the thermostat hole. He got me a thermostat, a rubber bushing inside a metal ring, and a spring.
I installed the parts and went to the lake today. The boat overheated after about 5 mins. I thought maybe I had put the thermostat in backward so I took it apart and flipped it over. Didn't take long to overheat again.
My questions Is, did he give me all the parts needed? Did I install them correctly? And is there another problem? I have a strong stream from the tell tale.
My engine is a 1990 60 hp johnson. Tj60tlesm. Please help. I'm about to set it on fire. Or pull my hair out. Lol. Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at the water pump / impeller in the lower unit?

Go to shop.evinrude.com, look up your motor and make sure you have the parts installed correctly. When was the water pump was replaced ??

have not checked the water pump. i bought the boat the summer before last. Im not sure when it was changed. I also went to shop.evinrude.com and the site must be down for maintenance. i will check again in a few mins.

Does the current telltale pump a strong stream of water? I would always suggest that any new owner of an outboard install a new impeller before the first sea trial. No reason to get stranded with a new outboard and an overheat condition. Agree with boobie, put a new impeller in it. Check to be sure the housing does not show signs of overheating (heat deformation.)

Found the diagram on shop.evinrude but I still ain't sure about where to put the spring. I wish it had the old thermostat in it still so I would know exactly that it was in correctly.

I think the spring is the last thing to go in and is held on by the cover.

Thanks. That's how I have it installed. Still overheating. Should I order a whole water pump kit or just the impellar?

Are you getting a false alarm? I would try to figure out what initiates the alarm.

No I don't think so. There is steam coming from the ports when the buzzer sounds.

Could this be one of the motors where the water diverters can get out of alignment in the block?

Could also be the last impeller fell a part and pieces of it are blocking ports in the head.

I know nothing about water diverters. The boat runs too cool with the stat out. When I put the t stat back in the water does come out of the **** tube alot stronger.

Hey guys I have a couple more questions. Does my outboard have a poppet valve?
The parts place that sold me my thermostat said the pressure relief spring is obsolete, so he took one out of a 40 horse motor. Will this be ok? He said it was just there to hold the thermostat in. I have done enough research to know that it is there to let some water bypass the thermostat at high rpms. Right?

I am gonna order a complete oem water pump kit today. It comes with a new thermostat cover and seal. Does it have the correct pressure relief spring included?
Should I buy oem or aftermarket? What is best?

I think on that one the spring pushs on the thermostat unit to act as the pressure relief valve, that spring will definitely still be available.
Yes its for medium to high rpms.
Package wont include spring, most aftermarket are good stuff

Mentioned a few posts above, definitely check out your waterpump and impeller. If the stainless cup or plate are grooved, it will cause air bubbles and overheat. As well if the impeller fins are cupped. hope this helps. good luck!

Ordered the parts today. The pump kit comes with a new thermostat cover and spring, and parts to upgrade the tell tale to the top of the block. Can't wait til they get here. I'm anxious. I am a industrial machine mechanic. " millwright" . How long does the pump change take?

Shouldn't take you more than 30-45mins. There's a good video on YouTube on the jist of it. I am sure you will find it simple and straightforward. I just did the tell tale mod too. You'll be fine. WOG made a good point too, make sure you stab that thing back together so the water tube seats correctly. I used some dishsoap on the tube and grommet, Seated perfectly! Let us know how it goes. Cool so I don't have to drill and tap if I just run it across the block. Probably will be the best method for me because I'm still not sure exactly where to drill the hole. Thanks guys
