Finally got my thermostat, now I'm overheating.

Cool so I don't have to drill and tap if I just run it across the block. Probably will be the best method for me because I'm still not sure exactly where to drill the hole. Thanks guys
Drill and tap on the top is what ive done as its by far the best place as air bubbles rise to the top and that is also where heat rises so thats where you want water -not an air pocket. Not sure what you mean by running across the block

You need to drill and tap. Routing the hose up and down does not solve the air trap problem.

Ok, so I need to drill and tap. That's no problem, I do it all the time. Problem is, I'm not sure where to drill. I want to be absolutely sure I'm drilling in the right spot. My boat is a 1999 johnson 60 hp. Tj60tlesm. I have done alot of reading and it seems that everyone puts their hole in different places. I can't afford to goof this up. Thanks

There is a threaded hole under the little bent I mount on top of the block. Am I supposed to drill through it? I need something to go off of.

The #432955 water pump comes with instructions where to drill (if I remember right). Drill on top of the exhaust box, 2" from rear edge, 1+3/8" from port gasket surface. Search this forum for service bulletin 2276 to learn about the complete procedure.

um, by 99 I dont think you need to relocate the water tube. I could be way wrong but you may want to double check this.

you might want to check the small bleeder hole in inner thermostat cover. if this gets clogged, no water goes thru so the hot water never reaches the thermostats to open them up. a small amount of water should circulate thru so that the hot water reaches the thermostats

Got my water pump changed. It was still intact but a little dry rotted. It had a wear plate on it from a 70hp. I also changed the thermostat spring to the correct spring. I ran it on muffs for about 15 mins. No buzzer but it was too hot to hold my hand on the head. What should the idle temp be? Gonna check it with a laser. Gonna have to take it to the lake this weekend to see what it does at wot.

temp should read approx 140F on the top of the block, give or take. 160+ is too high. If this is a saltwater motor, may have corrosion in the water passages. PO probably had a reason for removing the t.stat. In any case, think I would try to flush it out first -- like to remove the l.u. and push water up from the bottom through the water tube (low pressure, with tube to fit). May come to removing cyl heads and cleaning out the passages.

If it's still getting too hot I will just leave the t stat out til I can get a new head gasket. I don't want to take it apart without having one.
