Finally Started my Project Whaler

After getting 2 good seasons out of my 1964 whaler, it's time to start the project. I started it several weeks ago. I'll link to some pictures below. I'm much further along than what the pics show as I need to take some more pics to use up the film. I've still not made it to the digital camera yet!
Notice all the brown on the floor and sides...That is some super contact cement that the previous owner used to glue down the carpet. It is all removed now. I have finished sanding the interior, filling holes, etc ready for the ultra-tuff coating.

I currently have the boat upside down in my garage. All damage has been repaired. I removed 2 patches that Butcher
Bob put on the boat and fixed them according to the article on the continuous wave whaler site. Granted, they were water tight but ugly. I was worried about water in the hull, but me and my neighbor were able to pick the boat up, turn it upside down, etc with just us too. two people can pick it up easily, so I'm assuming that there's no water in it. I'm almost ready to spray the primer. The boat looks so much better now.

I'll be building a new center console out of mahogany and mounting the fuel tank in the console.

If you're not into grotesque pics (the boat was extremely ugly and rough - but dependable), look at some of the pics I have below

http://www.keltonkrew.com/whaler.html

I'll post more pics when I have them developed.

Kelton That old whaler is gonna make a good looking boat when you are through with it. I have been pondering a center console and I do believe you have made up my mind. I think I will find me a whaler hull I already have a good 65 johnson to go on it.
keep the pics coming I want to see the finished product.
BTW those texas pines look good to

bubbakat,

I'll keep the pics coming....I love this little boat....It is perfect for what I use it for...Have been on some rough lakes, got caught is giant wakes by 2 cigarrette boats that the wakes came together at the same time when I got to them, etc....and I felt extremely safe, stayed dry, etc.

I'm a member on a whaler forum and I just know they are cringing at a CC on a classic 13', but the original layout doesn't suit my needs....plus...IT IS MY BOAT!

You need to find a good 15' boat for that 65hp...These Boston Whalers are almost indestructible!

I hope it turns out as well as I've been dreamin' it will!

BTW, gotta love Texas pines (unless they are next to your driveway and drop pine sap on your truck), but we got lots of em! :D

nothin' like a little good pine knot to start a fire! (or as the call it in cajun land....Fat Pine)

I'm patiently (not really) waiting on materials now.....Hurry Up!!!!

That'll be a cool little Whaler. I would love to come across a Montauk, but they can be spendy...

I've added some updated pics.
Rows 6 through the bottom of the in-progess pics.

Notice the nasty hole in the bottom and sides where I removed Butcher-Bob's patches and fixed the correct way. The last pic shows the bottom of the hull with the repair done and smooth.

http://www.keltonkrew.com/whaler.html

Well, it may need work, but it sure is ugly :D Hey, nice job there KK. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project (even though we both know, boats are NEVER finished) ;)

Good deal Kelton. That is why I did my write up and just keep the link on the bottom of my posts. Makes it so much easier for those who are curious. Before I was always posting pics and descriptions, now the website can do the talking.

What you are doing with the gelcoat is the one thing I couldn't bring myself to do. What with everything else, I couldn't work up the gumption to deal with it. I will be painting it when it warmes up, but only above the waterline, as it stays in the water all season and as far as I know there isn't any paint that holds up to that (and if there is I doubt I can afford it). At first, how it looked was secondary to how it functioned, but now it is time to bring the looks up to speed. Good job so far on the Whaler....

Jason....from all of the work you've done, the gel would be a piece of cake for you!

I added the page to my sig....Don't think I'm going to make my April 1 deadline though....feel like I'm off about 2 weeks, maybe more!

Just finished sanding primer tonight getting ready for the gel-coat.....I can't wait to have a boat I'm not embarrased to go out in :D

Later

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

I live in Friendswood (and the boat is in Friendswood) so what is the excuse now :D

That's not too far from Hitchcock! :)

I only go to Livingston to camp/fish/party. I don't have a house there. I just pull my Travel Trailer, build a fire, launch the boat and have a good time!

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

I actually wouldnt mind giving you a hand so that I could get some hands on experience and actually see what it turns out like. I think it would help me with my project(s). This next week is not too good though as wife is scheduled for some surgery. nothing serious but I gotta be around here afterwards. If scheduling will permit though... i would help. :D :D
