Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Such a beautiful project coming together like this boat. With the amount of labor and time you have invested in it. It is absolutely a great looking boat and the console is only going to enhance the looks. But kelt I have got to ask you one small detail.
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;

;
;
;
;
;
;

Why hook such a beautiful piece of work to a ford :D :D :D :D

Kelton.......Beautiful job man. Your actually doing what I've been thinking about in my recliner. Got a CC Custom Craft, but it ain't no Whaler. Have always wanted the '64 Montuck, w/the mah. console and the inverted windshield. Found a good hull, now I just have to finish the '67 mustang, and get all my stationary power tools back, that I loaned out when I started the car. Keep the pictures coming!!

B O A T bring on another thousand

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Thanks. I've updated some pics and put (but you've probably seen them if you resurected this post).

I will be installing the console Monday evening, hopefully drilling the transom and installing the outboard on Wed. Would like to take it out for a test spin on Sat.

I had to get all my tools out too......Now my garage is cluttered and wife can't put her car in.....she's not happy about that :D

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Console looks good. I too have been working my arse off with the intention of taking the boat out this Saturday for its seasonal maiden voyage. I'll be testing the bow mount trollin, motor, the fishfinder, and everything else. It'll be a good shakedown so I can expose and fix any problems before I launch it for good. The weather calls for mostly clear and calm, temps in the high 60s, sounds perfect to me...

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Glad you got to see the pics. I don't mind if you copy the motor stand, heck if you lived closer I'd probably give it to you since I don't know what to do with it after this week. Wife wants me to convert it to a bike rack to store the bikes in the garage.

Almost done...starting to assemble the boat now and hopefully mount the PT-35 and outboard Wednesday evening.

I would keep the stand, you would be surpised how usefull it is. Mine is wide enough for my rolling toolchest to fit between the legs, so I just keep mine behind the chest. When I need it, I roll the chest out, use it, and put it everything back. No space is wasted. I do a lot of dinking around with old outboards though, you may not use it as much as I do.

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Kelton,your restoration looks great, I am in the process of restoring a jet ski that had been in the left in salt water for 6-8 months. I am undecided on whether to go with gel coat or awlgrip at this point. What made you go with the gelcoat? I have the compressor and all the space just trying to make the decison on what products to use. Also were did you get all your supplies at.
PS Have a place in Galveston also maybe we hook up some day, currently have a 26 Century for Offshore but looking for a whaler also to restore to fish the bays.

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

fec,

I decided on the gel coat for durability. I beach my boat at the lake, so I didn't want the paint to scratch. The gel is much thicker. For a jet-ski, I would do gel. Theres not that much there.

I got my gel from LBI fiberglass

http://www.lbifiberglass.com

I have most of all my supplies listed on my site
http://www.keltonkrew.com/whaler-restore.htm

If you're in Galveston, you're only about 25 miles away then.

I met a guy on continuouswave (whaler site) that lives real close that is re-doing a 27' whaler guardian for offshore.

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Well, I've finished my project whaler. I took some pics this weekend and will post them soon..

Took it out a week ago today for the maiden voyage....mostly uneventful until it was time to load.

I dropped my friend off to get the truck/trailer so I went a played a while....got pretty far away (did I mention it was extremely windy) and was going at full throttle and the boat goes immediately to the right (although I didn't turn the wheel). I shut it down quick and checked for deposits in my pants. gave it more throttle, turn to the right...all is a go....now need to go left,,,,turn left and then nothting....look back to see steering tube came loose from motor....uh oh....how do I get back now with lots of wind......ended up straddling the cooler helm seat....put in forward (barely crawling) and had 1 had on engine. I would steer the boat with my hand on the engine....luckily my new trailer has sideboards so it loaded up fine.

got home and fixed that...

went out this past weekend for fishing....boat ran great, good fish and I didn't have to wear camo!

I'll post some pics soon.

thanks to all of those that kept me going through this!

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

Boy kelt how many times have I told you to check those little hangging thingys :D

Glad nothing serious took place though.
Sure want to see that whaler with all the goodies on it.
I went ahead and added me an onboard charger to mine. I don't regret a dime of that money spent.
Sure is a piece of mind to hit the energy switch and see 100% charge across both batteries.

How do you like that tnt you installed?

Re: Finally Started my Project Whaler

bubba....by not checking the hangin' thingies, I almost left hangin' thingies....

I love the PT-35....gets my motor completely out of the water for beaching and trolling.....moves smoothly and can fine tune it.

plus, but setting the motor back 5 1/2", my motor is raised considerably above the bottom of the hull w/out cavitation. much smoother ride and the boat was much more fuel efficient.
