I have a mid 50's Johnson that I'm not too sure what the year or HP is. I need to get some points and condensers but I'm told that I need the model number to get the correct parts. The model number has been scatched off. I do have a readable serial number. Can I find the year and HP from that? If not, how can I find it?

Thanks

Re: finding year of motor without model number

From 1956 and up,all johnson 50s engines use the same contacts(580148),condensers and coils. They all use champion J6C plugs
If your engine is a two cylinder and the cowling is red or white, your engine is 1956 and up. You can go to any omc dealer and he has those parts for you.
It becomes a bit trickier if your engine is green.Because those may go back to late forties models and some things are different. In that case it would be best if you can send us a picture.Somebody will recognize it and send you the correct model and year.
Good luck.

The motor has a red/white cover on it. It has 10hp on the cover but the mechanic who worked on it believes it to be bigger, around 15-18hp. He also believes that the model number was scratched off to mask the real hp so it could be run on the lakes that are limited to 10hp around here....

In that case it is a 1957 or 1958 and the points and other tune up gear is widely available as I mentioned earlier. The 15 and 18 use the same stuff.
