Re: First Boat Project

ok thanks! the funny part is the biggest issue for us right now is finding a large enough barrel to start the engine in, it needs to be at least 23" wide (diameter).

I know what you mean, the cav plate is what you need to guage the size off, there not easy to find. Another option would be to purchase, see link for an example.....

http://www.yachtsee.com/flushingbag.htm

There would also be way cheaper versions out there. Good luck.

Read this from start to finish. You will LEARN a lot about what you are going to need to do to complete your boat rebuild. A lot of your questions will be answered in this thread. Micks did an excellent job rebuilding his runabout which is very similar to yours.

I'm just sayin...:D

Thanks so much for the link! I started reading it today and am on page 6. Its sure is long but very detailed. Mick should write a book out it.

Re: First Boat Project

So i've been haveing a hard time finding a large enough barrel to test my OB in, the calv. plate is 22.5". I finnaly found a tub we store x-mas decoration in. Its about 25 inches wide and about 20 inches deep. There would be another 8 inches of water above the calv. plate if full

So what do ya all think/ Will it work?

Not sure. It's close but may not be enough. I can't quite tell on those older lower units. On mine, the pump is mounted on the top of the lower unit which is above the water intakes. I found out that the bucket needs to be filled so the pump is completely submerged in order to work.

Re: First Boat Project

I am going to agree with ezmobee,

I have an old 1959 Evinrude and I attempted to use small container when I was attempting to adjust carb.. It just was not doing the job.. by the time you get it started it just slopps all the water out.. I ended up going to the hardware store and buying a small garbage can and even then I had to lift it on a block and keep the hose running to keep it completely full of water.. On my Evinrude the pump is also higher then intake. Just my opinion.. I learned by experience.. :D more then once.... lol

:p

Ya, i went looking for a barrel but the only one that would fit my cav plate(23") was like $50 at HD. I'm just goint to have to try and find some one who has a big enough barrel.

Re: First Boat Project

Ok so I haven't been able to work on the actual boat lately, I have been dealing with a starter issue on the OB ( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=444527 ). Basically tried to start it, just clicked, cleaned all the connections, replaced some terminals, still didn't work, got the starter rebuilt. That's where I'm at now our goal is to reinstall the starter and get the motor started.

As far as the boat goes, we aren't going to start to get into the floor until the football season is over so that we can work on it after school for longer than a few hours at a time. That should be in a few weeks but in the mean time we are going to wash it more and get the motor running.

Some pics of the rebuilt starter:

Re: First Boat Project

Got the rebuilt starter in today. Man it was tricky! The top and bottom plates come off so easily and the bolts go up through the bottom of the starter. Took me a half an hour, some choice words, and some masking tape to get in. Working on these outboard sure forces you to be resourceful!

But got it in and hooked her up to a jet ski battery. Not enough juice to turn her over fast enough. Pulled out a truck battery, cleaned the contacts, sprayed a little starting fluid, and she fired right up!

So the issue now is there isn't any water coming out of what i assume is the water outlet. Should water be coming out instantly or does the motor need to be running for a few seconds for water to pass through?

Check out my vid of it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oERZgbDCNE

(this is where i assume water should be coming out)

Sounds good!

Yes that is where the water will come out. It'll just spit out and could take a minute to start. I think you need to go deeper in the water. Have you try to find a plastic 55 gal drum?

Re: First Boat Project

When i went to HD the largest barrel they had was $50 and for that much i would rather just take her down to the water. I might try to find someone who can lend me one though.

I'm going to replace the impeller regardless, I'm just worried the whole pump assembly went bad.

So its normal if water doesn't start spraying out as soon as the motor starts? The longest i kept it on for was less than 5 sec.

Re: First Boat Project

ITS ALIVE!! :D See if you can fire it up in neutral when you try again, appeared to be in gear in the vid, or was that just the exhaust creating all that disturbance in the drum? You could also keep the hose running into the drum so it wont lose its level. Unless you are sure its been serviced previously, the impeller/pump should definately be on the top of your to do list, even more important for motors like these without a telltale. Post your concerns on the water outlet in the johnnyrude repair section, there should be someone more familiar with that motor who can tell you just how much water and when you should be seeing it outta there, probably not alot and even then only when the motor is at normal operating temp imo.

Yes it takes a little time for water to get pumping. Put an ad on your local Craigslist.com for a free Plastic 55 gallon drum get the word out your looking for one, ask the maintance dept at your school? One will come your way. Use a sawzall to cut it to max hight and keep the hose going. If you can get it on the water that would be great. Take a paddle and fire putter outer! Good Luck

Ya, it was in N. I put it into gear for a quick second one time to make sure it was in N.

But ya, i'm going to first replace the impeller then hopefully find a better water container to test in. I tried to take the front panel off the OB today and 2 out of the 3 bolds broke in the process:mad::confused:
So I put a bunch of Liquid Wrench on the rest. I tested them two applications and an hour later and the rest seem to be coming out better.

Any idea on how to deal with the two where the heads broke?

Re: First Boat Project

Sorry, i can see now you had it neutral after watching again, probably set up not to start in gear anyway.

If accessible, all i ever do when that happens is carefully drill out starting with a small bit (centre punch first) and working up until you can get a decent enough size screw remover in there, use plenty of penetrant spray and maybe some heat if possible before trying to screw out.

So would it be good to use heat on the other bolts that i haven't tried to take out yet?

Re: First Boat Project

Don't get into the habit of using starting fluid on it. It strips all the oil off the parts that need lubricating. If you need some liquid starting help :p stick with some pre-mix in a spray bottle.

Wow, that's a really good idea! I knew starting fluid wasnt great for 2-strokes, i just never knew of a sub.

Wood- Will the mini torch burn any paint on the housing? Or do i just not directly touch flame to metal?

Thanks you guys!

Oh, and the search for a REAL barrel is on. Found a free 40 gallon but it is a 45 min. drive. Also found some new 55 gallons for $20.
