I literally just finished the first coat of Interlux's Perfection paint on my old tug. The color is fighting lady yellow. I began this morning just as the dew burned off and it took about an hour and a half to finish the first coat. I had no problems. I used a phenolic core closed cell roller and a badger brush. It went on great. I used fine line tape with blue to extend it a bit to protect against overroll. I already noticed a little dirt and there is one bug so far on the transom. However I am very happy. It took one quart to do the whole first coat. I have three more to finish it up. I have about 60hours in the hull prep and over 200 total thus-far. Let me know if it passes muster.

the sun is too bright to do it justice, but you can see a slight reflection in the bow here

here is a reflection of a ladder about 6 feet off the bow

Transom is shiney baby!

The sun stayed off the port side long enough to get it done, temp is about 74 here

There was a good bit of damage on the bow, not any more!
I'm as happy as a jumpin' monkey!

Looks good Drewpster.

Did you roll and tip it yourself or did you have a helper?

I did the roll/tip by myself. The conditions were optimal. I did about a 20 inch strip rubrail to bootstripe with the roller and tipped it off as I went then continued while cutting in the top part the roller would not do. I took my time and so far its all leveling nicely.

:D Looking good, ya got me so excited i went out and started back in on the StarCraft......

Look's like you got a good base coat going, dont get it to thick or you will get solvent entrapment, aka bubble's after she dry's

There's an old rolling Stone tune "Time is on you side"........;)

Do yourself a favor and scuff the base coat within 24-36 hours, after that time frame she will start to harden and perfection is as hard or harder than Primekote. It just really makes it easy takes about half the time and come's off a bit like chalk go slow and dont bust thourgh the original coat.........and that eaiser said than done.....;)

TG, what should he scuff it with?

Hey drewps, that looks great. What was the damage on the front of the hull?

Scuffing is a word i find more appropriate than sanding, Perfection and Brightsides are paint's that need many layer's to get a good result. What i've found is if your surface prep is good you can roll a thin film down and let it dry for 24 hours take 400 grit and lightly scuff (sand) the surface, just enough or dull the finish no more.

After you get a good solid color (it will take 3-4 coats) it is then time to take any imperfection's out of the paint it'self and this must be done very carefully as to avoid breaking thourgh the paint, hence you will leave a noticalbe evidence that you done so. This is why i have posted a roll and roll method of painting,if done properly there are no sag's or brush stroke's that need to be addressed in the final finish coat, which can be compared to any high quality spray job.

Umm you get that old barge race ready yet.....;)

Re: First Coat of Perfection Pics.

Thanks for the advice, I will slate some time in the next few evenings if I am lucky to get some sanding in. I plan on trying roll/roll method after I can round up a good sized roller on the second coat. I still have the link you sent me I think. Do you know any stores where I can find it?
The "damage to the front of the hull" statement was a general one considering there was damage all over the hull. I thought the head-on picture was a good example how smooth it all turned out. The was a deep gash in the gel just below the rail in that area. (also true for the rest of the hull)

Gary, The painting part is fun, so sure flip the bill and I will be there. You have to do the prep though. NO WAY I'm doing all that sanding again anytime soon! :D

Re: First Coat of Perfection Pics.

How much finish did you end up using to cover that much boat? I'm curious if the coverage rate on the paint matches closely to the actual application.

Re: First Coat of Perfection Pics.

The boat is 24 feet long and the sides of the hull are about 3 feet wide from the rubrail to the waterline where the paint ends. So 72 square feet each side is 144 square feet total area..right?
It took a single quart to cover what you see here. And there was paint left in the pan! It needs at least one more coat, maybe two, because there are some dark patches where you can see the darker filler through the primer. But I am confident one more coat will cover that. I bought four quarts as recommended by the Interlux website. I will probably end up using three to get the finish where I want it. Being a lighter color probably makes it easier. I am sure dark blue or black are more difficult to get just right.
Thanks for all the compliments, it means alot coming from you all.
Raining today, thank goodness the scuffing is done for the next coat, maybe next weekend.

Re: First Coat of Perfection Pics.

looks real good.i know im not looking forward to sanding my 14 foot cedar-strip boat as there,s a lot of prep involved also ,but the finished product after it,s varnished should be well worth it.keep up the good work.
