First I/O, General maintenance q.

Hello Gentleman,

I may purchase a 2002 Capri Cuddy, 3.0 with the Alpha 1. I'm just wondering if the general maintenance is something I could handle on my own? I'm a decent wrench turner but have never owned an I/O.

Yes, many many people here handle their own I/O maintenance. After all, that's the main purpose of this forum. I do mine as well and I can assure you, you have more mechanical knowledge than I do. Check out the stickies at the top of the forum for tons of good info on maintenance.

With a boat, it is all about preventive maintenance! That is where most folks get into trouble, worn out impellers, water in the oil,leaky bellows, worn out gimbal rings etc. follow the maintenance checklists and you will be way ahead in the long run.

if you understand that the big end of a screw driver goes in your hand, you probably can do your own maintenance. if you have a question, post it, we will help.

Exactly Why I want the help. I'm trying to keep this motor in good shape as it has been well taken care of. I had a outboard that was pretty easy to maintain, impellers, gear oil, seals and so on. Ran like a top.

I would suggest that you get the service manuals (preferably PDF versions) for the engine and outdrive. As stated, if you are a decent wrench turner, then all you need is to go through the manuals to gain familiarity and for the specific maintenance steps, etc.

+1^^^ The shorter your season the more important preventive maintenance becomes. The more TLC you give the boat the better it will treat you and the fewer times if ever will it leave you stranded. As Ted suggested you should get yourself a manual. Here's a link to where you can find one:

That's about the simplest I/O set up you could find, a good one to learn on. Much simpler than modern outboards as long as you can get at everything...

Yes I've seen pictures only so far of the motor compartment and everything looks accessible. Thx Bondo for the extra manual link. That's a must for me.
