Lower unit seal kit... check. Tried to do some more tonight to no avail. Gear housing bolts won't budge. Bad luck on my good friday. I'll get back to you after the holiday, and hopefully I'll find myself some tools. Happy Easter all!

Oh before I forget. One of the gaskets on the exhaust cover fell apart on removal, are they both the same? I noticed the gaskets on the seal plate are different inside and out. Okay I'll leave you alone now... for a little while.

Thanks again

Thanks for all your help guys. The motor is all apart now. A little heat and some encouraging four letter words got those last bolts out. What a mess inside the gear housing!post06.jpg I will probably have to do the seals, so I'm sure there will be more tearing down before starting to put it all back together. Found some more broken parts. Sadness.post08.jpg Yup strearing bracket! There are more but I thought this one might bring the most pity. I did give the swivel bracket a bath in the parts washer today. Cleaned up pretty well for a 56 year old greaser. It has the serial number plate on it so I put it on my desk at work to remind me to get my lower unit in gear. I will be cleaning and searching for parts for a while, so I will start a new post later. Look for part two... the rebuild!
Thanks again,
Grant

PM me if you need parts - I have a parts motor at very reasonable prices.

This link should help when it's time to reseal the gear case. You can get a seal kit right here at iboats for about $20.

That's a great thread! Do you happen to know the part number for the kit for this motor. Searching I can find parts and kits mostly back to 56. I've read that there are some interchangable parts but I don't want to get the wrong kit.

These are the parts I PMed about

I have a general 1955 catalog so I can't give part numbers but I'll try to describe them if you want to give PM me your phone number.
The part I thought you might not recognize is the liner between the broken steering bracket and the swivel bracket. What is that made of? Whatever it is the steering bracket ate it!
