Re: First time boat owner, tips and a couple questions

Thanks everyone for all your input. I have been back and forth on getting rid of this and restoring it countless times.

I think for my first boat, this is going to be way more than I anticipate. With that being said...

A 1978 Sear SRV 240 I have ran across has a very clean hull, much better than the 77 220 I have now. It appears it has the 5.7 Mercruiser and an Alpha One outdrive. Can anyone confirm that is what is original for that boat? And is this a much better start than my current boat with the OMC?

Ayuh,... Without a Doubt, a Better start than an OMC.....

1978 might be the 350 motor, but the drive would be the Model 1 known as the 260....
Alpha 1s came out in the early 80s...

My mistake, it does say the 5.7. Not the 5.8.

Im mainly concerned about the outdrive, and it says it's the Alpha One. Hopefully this would work out much better for me. I assume the parts and labor are easier and cheaper to come by, if it would be necessary?

Realistic and modestly, how much would you think I could move this boat for? If you were in the market for something like this whats a fair asking price? Without the trailer, cause if I get this other one, I need the trailer because it doesnt come with one.

As said before you would be money ahead if you part it out, you may get lucky and find someone who wants to buy it as a project boat, but you may also be sitting on it for a long time. Storing a 22 and a 24 foot boat would be tough. Your call but a 30+ year old boat with unknown engine and drive problems and an omc to boot would be a tough sell. People would be much more apt to buy the parts they need rather than the whole boat, cause then they would be stuck with getting rid of it. Unless there is a boat salvage yard near you that buys old boats you may be forced with a tough decision as to what to do with it.
