Problem... Motor won't start due to no spark.

After poping the top it lookes like the points arent the best shape so I've purchased the tune up kit (2 breakers/ 2 condensors) and tomorrow I'm gonna install.

I'm a first timer so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this operation as a whole.

http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scan0002cm9.jpg

From the book It looks like Id be going from G to I (I dont have a light or timing fixture).

What exaclty does it mean to ... "with the breaker arm on the high lobe of the cam (full open)". How exaclty do I find this position?

On H it say to rotate 180deg for the second set. So does the mean the first set would be left point and the second would be for the right?

Thanks for the help!!

Before you remove the existing points rotate the engine and watch whats happening. The snout of the engine cranksahft has a high spot or lobe (in laymans terms, "a bump") on it. As that point comes around it pushes the points open. When the points are open at their widest point, that's the point gap which must be properly set. There are two sets of points. Set one side first, turn the crankshaft and set the other set. If you don't have either tool, you'll at least need a feeler gauge set which is a couple of bucks at any store that sells auto parts. Set the gap to spec. On the other hand, there are lots of service procedures that are best left to a shop if you don't have tools, knowledge, a manual, or the time to do. Do it wrong and you can do serious engine damage.

It will be best to replace only one set of point and condenser at a time. Use the untouched set as a guide if you get lost.

Remove a set of old points and replace with a new set. Reconnect wires on point set (coil wire, condenser wire, kill wire)

Notice that the points fiber rub block rides on the points cam. The points cam can have the word Top stamped into it.
Rotate the crank shaft until the rub block of the point set is aligned with the crank shaft key (woodruff key).
Adjust the gap in the point set for .020
Tighten the points lockdown screw and recheck the gap setting.

Do the above procedure on the second set of points. To adjust the second set, be sure to again, rotate the crank shaft until the rub block on the second point set aligns with the crank shaft keyway, then set the gap.

Make sure all wires are positioned well away from the crank shaft and don't stick up to interfere with the flywheel.
Replace or re-lube the points cam felt wiper.

Reinstall flywheel and torque flywheel nut to specs. Be sure crank shaft taper and flywheel tapers are clean and dry, no oil or grease.

Havent started on it but I went out and "eyeballed".

Are you talking about the flywheel key (key on shaft above points cam? Just wanna be sure. 8)

What type of lube do you suggest to use?Molybdenum lubricant?

At the moment their kinda dirty what would you suggest cleaning them with? lacquer thinner?

Rotate the crank shaft

I try moving the magneto plate but it only moves a short distance (turns when giving more gas). I assume your talking about the shaft (with flywheel key/threads for flywheel nut). If so whats the best way to move this?

I apprecaited everyone taking the time to school a newbie.
Many thanks all!!

Yes, exactly.....

Light machine oil should work just fine....

That will work just fine.

As you have already found out, the magneto plate won't turn very far....that's normal.

The vertical shaft , with the threads is the crank shaft. You will want to rotate this shaft 180 degrees to adjust the second set of points. Don't be concerned about the position of the magneto plate, it doesn't matter. Thread the flywheel nut onto the crank shaft and when lightly seated, use a wrench to rotate the crank shaft. This is easier to do with the plugs out (no compression). Just rotate the crank shaft until the points rub block align with the crank shaft key. Then set the gap.
You'll want to rotate the crank shaft clock-wise only (normal direction of a running motor). If you go past the key-rub block alignment position, just continue turning a full revolution aand make the alignment. Some say you can damage the water pump impeller by going counter clock-wise. After you get both sets of points gapped, you can rotate the crank and re-check your gap setting for each set of points. When you are satisfied with the settings, replace the flywheel and torque the nut.

Remove the spark plugs when you do this procedure. Makes it easier to turn the crankshaft.
