I have a question about purchasing a boat?

I am looking at a wellcraft 1986 with a mercruiser. The seller saids that all it needs is the timing adjusted to get it all up and runniging. I ws wondering if anyone knows the cost of this? or what does "timing" actually mean, or is it even worth buying or fixing.

It would be nice to know what Mercruiser Engine this is 3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, etc. Next you need to be aware that repairs on I/O's can be very expensive. So -- if the owner says "all it needs is timing" then you need to do more investigation. Setting ignition timing is a very simple task and can be accomplished by a shop for a minimum cost. However, ask the seller "WHY" the timing needs adjusting and "WHY" he/she hasn't had it done. Timing may be off because the timing chain is broken or stretched (V6 & V8) or timing gears (4 cylinder) are broken. The ignition system may need work. The distributor is shot, the distributor drive gears are stripped or broken. See where I'm going with this? Do not buy this boat unless you can hear it run and are able to do an on-water test. If you don't understand all of this, take someone with you that does. Otherwise you need to almost steal it. If timing is all the problem was you got a deal. If it turns out to be more serious, you can afford to spend some money on it. Remember -- "Buyer Beware".

In most cases when you hear those words that is you signal to run and run fast because he's got you in his sights. Because when you get done with "all it needs is" you have probably replaced the engine.

Agree with the other guys. Also, '86 is long enough back that the exhaust tubes.....flexible tubes that carry the engine's exhaust out to the outdrive... and transom seals can be in need of repair. Having done this personally, without proper training or special tools it was a very undesirable bear to do. These seals keep outside water from entering the boat in addition to routing exhaust where is is supposed to go.

HTH

Mark

Re: First Time Buyer

Any time someone says "all it needs" is something simple like timing or a tuneup, ask this question: Why didn't the seller do it and ask for more money for a well-running boat?? Fact is either they're lying or they don't know what's wrong with it. Unless you know for sure, from your own inspection and experience, don't get sucked into this deal.
