Re: First Time Buyer
It would be nice to know what Mercruiser Engine this is 3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, etc. Next you need to be aware that repairs on I/O's can be very expensive. So -- if the owner says "all it needs is timing" then you need to do more investigation. Setting ignition timing is a very simple task and can be accomplished by a shop for a minimum cost. However, ask the seller "WHY" the timing needs adjusting and "WHY" he/she hasn't had it done. Timing may be off because the timing chain is broken or stretched (V6 & V8) or timing gears (4 cylinder) are broken. The ignition system may need work. The distributor is shot, the distributor drive gears are stripped or broken. See where I'm going with this? Do not buy this boat unless you can hear it run and are able to do an on-water test. If you don't understand all of this, take someone with you that does. Otherwise you need to almost steal it. If timing is all the problem was you got a deal. If it turns out to be more serious, you can afford to spend some money on it. Remember -- "Buyer Beware".
