Also found this boat? It looks like its in overall good shape, right?

Are you kidding me? Looks closely at the interior pics. That boat looks like it's spent time on the bottom of the river. Terrible condition for a 2003. The SeaRay you posted is a bit better but not much. From what I can see in the pics the interior vinyl looks trashed. Not sure where the "new cushions" are that he's talking about. Boats that have not been well cared will absolutely end up being money pits.

On the plus size, in my opinion those are size and style boats that are good for a first boat so you're on the right track but pay closer attention to condition. You should be able to find something in very nice shape with your budget.

Hey daddieo5 - two points to help you look for a boat: With a 14MO kiddo, consider the boat what you want for the next 4 years. Once this kiddo (or the next, or the next, or ... ;)) hits about 5 or so, things change up a little bit. (That's a random age figure based on proposed physical abilities of a 5 or 6 year old, and how my kids did on boats - your experience may vary):

For now:
1.) High gunwales - you want a boat that has side wall (inside the boat) so a toddler can't climb/fall/otherwise-propel themselves over the side
2.) Stability - width (beam) of the boat will help with stability. It'll make it heavier and affect other things too, but stability is something you're going to want. It's not the only thing that will affect it but it's a biggie. Two boat styes that are great for stability are Pontoons (big wide platform, not real fast) and tri-hulls (older style of runabout: need to watch yourself buying 'em).

Take Mrs. daddie05 and little daddie05 to the local marine dealer and climb up on a couple of boats (doesn't matter that you're not buying new). Just get in and get a feel for the boat. Climb on a pontoon and see, climb on a runabout and see, etc., etc ...

In 4 years or so, your "boating" will take a dramatic turn where the munchkin(s) will be able to start thinking about going on a tube, skiing, fishing, etc., etc. Your boating needs are likely to change then.

Man if I were you I'd serioulsy look at a pontoon boat. For what you are wanting to spend you could get a 21' with a 90hp pretty easy, lots of room for the ankle biter, high rails so he dosn't crawl overboard, good fishing platform, easy maintenance and can be hauled with most any light truck or SUV.

THIS.... Smaller, but services three people very well. Great option. Might be the best! I would love for my boys to have this. GREAT first boat and you might never get rid of it and might fill it with tons of memories. Then move up to something bigger and keep this for the kids when they've grown up:

:)

A maybe. Only inspections can tell:

Here's something better than maybe... maybe:

Re: First time buying a boat. Please help!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and suggestions. I found a couple of other boats available here on cl:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/boa/2943381132.html

http://ventura.craigslist.org/boa/2972981565.html
the second one is my favorite because it has all the extras and looks nicer. But what do you guys think? Should I just listen to the engine run, because a couple of sellers that I've spoken to said that I couldn't test ride them. Thanks again!!!

The second one looks to be in good condition. If I was going to spend that much I would want a test ride. A boat can sound great in the driveway and still be running poorly. You really can't tell untill you get it in the water and under load. If they shy away from a test ride offer to pay for some gas and tell them your bringing money so they know you are a serious buyer. If they still won't go for it I would have to assume there is a reason they won't take you and walk.

What's OMC...lol My wife didn't like the first boat anyway. The owner of the second (link) boat said that it's been garaged for 3 years, and now he is trying to sell it. He's getting it serviced, changing the filters, and among other things. He also said I can test ride it when it's ready in a week or so. Is there any red flags that I should be worrying about? I once had a car in storage for over 15 months, and it turned on right away. I just did the tune-up and changed the gas before using it regularly. I feel this may be the boat I buy if everything works out well.

It's worth a look and at a glance, it appears to be a garaged boat. It's worth a look.

Both of those looks to be in exceptionally good condition. Don't think you could go wrong with either.

Hey everyone,

I'm glad to say that I finally purchased my first boat. 89 Sea ray bowrider with a mercury 135, I think. The owner took me out on a test ride, and I fell in love with it instantly. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

Re: First time buying a boat. Please help!

So I took out my bow rider yesterday for the first time to Castaic lake (LA county). I was so nervous since it was only the second time I've ever driven a boat. I think I did okay. I just sucked at getting close to the dock (took me 15 min). I had no anchor or rope so the current was making it even more difficult for a first time boater to get close to the dock. My bow rider is an 18' so what size anchor would I need to keep it still? Chain or rope? My wife noticed some boats on the grass where ppl were picnicking and she asked me to go there as well. However, I was reluctant because I didn't want my prop to hit the ground/rocks. If you've been to Castaic and have done this sort of thing, please tell me if there's a correct way to do it? Thanks again.
