I have a Fairline 19', with a Suzuki 9.9hp Outboard. It needs a bit more oomph so I am in the market for a 25hp outboard.
When I find one, can I transport the new outboard in my car boot lying down? or do they have to be kept upright?
How do people lift the outboard from the car boot - over to the boat - onto the transom? I have checked and a 25hp motor weighs 70kg - far more than I can manage alone.

Re: fitting a new outboard motor

One trick for transporting an outboard is to let it run out of gas prior to lying it down. This will burn off the fuel rather than have it leak in the car.

You could buy or fabricate a motor stand w/ wheels, but if it's a one-time job I'd get a neighbor kid or friend to help carry it.

Welcome to iboats:)

I don't know what a 19' Fairline is, but on most boats that size you leave the motor attached all the time.

As to whether you can lay it down...well it depends, a 2 stroke can be laid down with no issues, 4 strokes will leak oil if they are laid down incorrectly. How you move it around depends on how fit you are, or how fit your friends are.
